Why Amidu should run for President

WHY AMIDU SHOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT OF THE REBUBLIC OF GHANA

BY CITIZENS FOR CHANGE

The thing about integrity, particularly whilst holding a government post is the importance of having a sense of idealism in the job. Idealism of what is for the greater good of Ghana, how one is upholding that ‘greater good’ in their own small way and ultimately not succumbing to bribery particularly the sought that causes colossal financial loss to the State.

Although this Waterville/Woyome matter may (as it is being suggested in some quarters) go much higher in terms of presidential involvement and civil servants were probably just following instructions albeit with their own respective fees attached; someone has got to be looking out for the greater good of Ghana. Even if our leaders aren’t or our leaders are inappropriately laundering large sums of money through outfits like Waterville and sharks like Woyome in order to recycle an undisclosed percentage of that money to build a new wing of their presidential seat or buy a new jet outside the official budget for the year. Money laundering is after all illegal for legitimate reasons such as lack of transparency and accountability. Integrity also means you don’t wait till you get to the upper echelons of government, surviving what most couldn’t, that beast that is the life of an eternal civil servant and then decide subconsciously and then not so subconsciously to get less than 1 percent of a deal that is not in the interest of the State. All because of the sacrifices made along the way of a 30 year career with no glory or worse still because you never got an opportunity to ‘chop’ along the way because you weren’t allowed to sign on behalf of the government so you ‘chop’ at the top. Perhaps our civil servants should be given a crash course of what it is to adopt idealistic notions as a citizen of Ghana holding post.

In any case, Amidu it appears has that sense of idealism. Whether borne out of the rage and bitterness that comes from sparring with a government that didn’t accept his resignation letter only to turn around and fire him as Attorney General, one cannot say. He however has what has been lacking for a long time in Ghanaian politics. He is a leader that has the fortitude to walk alone at all costs for the greater good of our nation’s resources. We get a guy like that in the Office of the President, who knows what he could do. First however, he’d have to stay alive and then get some serious financial backing to run a campaign as an independent nominee who has arguably won the hearts of most Ghanaians. If he does run, even I might find it necessary to vote.
