Election 2028: An open letter to Alan Kyarematen over his return to the NPP

Alan Kyarematen Alan Kyarematen

Dear Alan Cash,

Your return to the New Patriotic Party is as crucial as the survival of the Danquah-Busia- Dambo tradition you cherish and hope to uphold. But to every prize there’s a price. It takes two to tango. And this could be the last window of opportunity to rescue a dying political party if it hasn’t already been dead.

Of course, you can choose to abstain from this scramble for the political survival of the New Patriotic Party like the princes of Dagbong kingdom did to their youngest brother Naa Zangina. And I am but a messenger.

During the sixteenth Ya-Na's reign in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, around 1711 there about, what has happened to your party, the NPP, had happened to the Dagbong kingdom which later became a tributary state to the Asante empire.

The Ya-Na (Overlord of the Dagbong kingdom) at the time was Ya-Na Wumbei Muhammad Zangina Mankaanu. The Dagombas and the Gonjas were constantly at each other’s neck, and it was the Gonjas AKA the Gbanya invaders, who had always attacked the Dagbong kingdom.

Does it surprise you that the battle I am inviting you to join is between the NPP and a Gonja seating president? Please, I beg for your undiluted attention. It is a history I want you to make some deductions from and predict the future of your political ideals and the NPP tradition in general.

In one of those military expeditions and campaigns, the Gonjas had attacked the Dagbong kingdom but most of the senior warriors and princes of the kingdom refused to heed the call of the Ya-Na. Instead, they told the Ya-Na point blank, “You should use the same dirty tricks you had used to become Ya-Na to fight the war.” And true to their word, they really never showed up to help fight against the Gbanya invaders.

Was that treacherous and betrayal of one’s country? The answer is no, and maybe yes. But what had happened prior to this expression of bitterness and betrayal should determine whether the elderly princes decision constituted betrayal or not.

You see, Ya-Na Zangina popularly called Naa Zangina who was the first Ya-Na to accept Islam, was the youngest of all his father, Ya-Na Tugturi's princes. Tradition of the Dagbong kingdom demands that the eldest son of the king succeeds him. However, Naa Zangina became the Ya-Na succeeding his father despite the presence of his elder brothers who were more than qualified because it was the Overlord of Mamprugu who chose him.

After the Naa Tugturi, Ya-Na Zangina’s father had joined his ancestors, the elders and senior princes had quarreled among themselves over the ascension to the throne. And because the Overlord of Mamprugu is the historical senior brother of every Ya-Na, disputes among princes of Dagbong are usually settled by him.

Those days, several wives of the king could give birth in the same day. So, it was difficult determining who was the first born if pregnant queens gave birth in the same day. That could have created the misunderstanding among the senior princes after the demise of Ya-Na Tugturi. But to their utter shock, the Mamprugu Overlord decided to simply choose the youngest prince to douse the tension who never openly expressed any interest in becoming Ya-Na.

Nonetheless, the choice of Prince Zangina as the next Ya-Na was in line with a prophecy foretold earlier by a Mallam called Sabali Yarna Yaa Musah. Nehemiah Levtzion narrates that when the Gonjas as young kingdom and inexperienced in war kept attacking the Dagombas, the Dagombas tried desperately to know where did that audacity come from. He posits that the capital of the Dagbong kingdom was initially at Daboya because salt was like gold those days. But under Ya-Na Darizigu, the grandfather of Ya-Na Tugturi, the Dagbong kingdom was attacked and the Ya-Na was killed by the Gonjas and took over Daboya. They drove the Dagombas to eastern part of Daboya towards present day Tamale. Then during the reign of Ya-Na Luro AKA Naa Luro, the Gonjas attacked again. But at the famous battle between Naa Luro and the leader of the Gonjas called Kaluasi Dojia, the latter was defeated by Naa Luro.

After Naa Luro, his son Naa Tugturi ascended the throne and the Gonjas attacked again driving Dagombas to the far East around and beyond Yendi which was initially called Cheli or Tsheli and a capital of the Konkombas. The Dagombas also conquered Tsheli and drove the Konkombas further east of that town and named it “Naya” (the King’s Town).

It was around this time the Dagombas discovered that the secret of the brazen attacks on them by the Gonjas, came from some spiritual support they had from Muslim clerics.

The Gonjas had a Muslim cleric called Muhammad al-Abyad also known as Fatigi Morokpe. He was responsible for the preparation of the Gonjas wars before they attacked any nation or empire using the Holy Quran.

As a result, Naa Tugturi befriended Sabali Yarna Yaa Musah who was a well known powerful Malam who forecasted the future events before they happened. On one occasion, Naa Tugturi asked him who among his princes shall be his successor. Sabali Yarna Yaa Musah told him his successor hasn’t been born yet but he shall be given birth to by a certain most junior wife. And when that woman was actually going to give birth, she gave birth to a male. That was Naa Zangina.

It was never a surprise then that he was the one the Overlord of Mamprugu selected to become the next Ya-Na when the elder brothers fought among themselves over who succeeds their father.

Was it coincidence? No, it was not. But when some of the princes had refused to help him fight the war against the Gonjas, Adanzigli decided to help him on condition that the Ya-Na willed he becomes the next Ya-Na after him. The deal was signed. And Adanzigli went ahead to wage the war against the Gonjas under the leadership of Prince Kumpatia. That battle took place at Sangg near the Yendi. The Gonjas was defeated and that defeat ended Gonjas attacks on the Dagombas and they later became allies and they are still allies till date.

In the above history, Dr Bawumia is the young prince Naa Zangina, and those who stormed out of the party because a “young prince” had been selected as Flag bearer, are the senior princes who had quarreled among themselves and had refused to protect the kingdom. Of which you, dear Alan Cash, are among. But you could be the Andanziglii in the story although you are at liberty to help save the sinking party or the God who had chosen Dr Bawumia will come to his aid. This is why he needs a king to vice him if you refuse to “go home” and help Dr Bawumia by running with him.

Principally, I am writing to you inviting you to come back and help rescue your party which got disbanded by the hand of the opponent greenlighted by God. Without any shred of doubt, you are one of the most influential capos and towering stalwarts of the NPP as far as the Danquah-Busia-Dambo tradition is concerned. And you have certainly remained a fascinating political prodigal father, a godfather, and the political capo di tutti capi for many aspiring budding politicians in the country. Your legacy must not end on the alter of personal aggrandizement, bitterness, vindictiveness and a benighted vendetta. You are highly respected by all and sundry. I am writing you this epistle to reconsider the possibilities of your return to the New Patriotic Party, NPP.

Hitherto, I was a passionate critic and lambaster of your party (note I didn’t say your former party but your party), and I have been responsible for countless venomous articles which went straight for the jugular of your party while in government. But I have reconsidered my stance on the party’s legacy and ideals as a political party not because I merely want to cross the isle of political spectrum but because God wants it that way.

Yes, God. The point I am drumming home here is that regardless of what transpired, there can still be room for compromise especially if that invitation comes from God. Had it not been for some dreams and visions I have witnessed myself, there’s no way I could have the audacity to make such a U-turn. I never like your party at all. But what I have seen with own my naked eyes has given me the proclivity to write you this letter.

I recently chanced upon your interview you granted DW Africa in which you famously said your return to the NPP may only happen if the party makes you the leader and flag bearer of it. To most discerning minds, you were simply stating the impossibility of your return to the party. But the fact that you still believe there’s some condition that can spur and ginger up your come back to the NPP was simply saying the quiet part very loud: it is not impossible for your return. At least, there’s some one reason or condition which could bring you back.

The leadership of the party. And rightly so, you deserve to lead it and there’s no problem about that if there is still room for you to contest according to the constitution of your party. Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria, had served as vice president under Obasanjo from 1999 to 2006. He left the PDP and joined Action Congress and led it as flag bearer into the 2007 presidential election but lost to Umar YarAdua.

Then in 2009, he returned to the PDP and contested for its flag bearership but lost to Goodluck Jonathan. In 2014, he left the PDP again and joined the Buhari new APC party. He contested the Flag bearership with Buhari but lost. Buhari went ahead to beat Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 election and became president of Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar left the APC in government after realizing Buhari had second term ambitions to join the PDP again in 2017. He contested the flag bearership and won and led the PDP into the 2019 presidential election.

Again, he lost to Buhari. He was made the Flag bearer again of PDP going to the 2023 presidential election and again lost to the current president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Just last year, Atiku Abubakar had abandoned the PDP again and had joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), contested its flag bearership and had won to contest the 2027 general elections! Atiku Abubakar is more than a butterfly political executive, he is a political dragon.

Call him whatever name, that’s patriotism, that’s statesmanship, it is love for country of a man who believes in the beauty of his dreams to serve his people. Who knows, maybe he is that one leader Nigerians have been waiting for all this year.

So, my dear Alan Kyarematen, do not let your enemies run you out of town because you have decided to come back to the NPP. Let them say whatever they want but don’t be grieved by what they say, and don’t be stopped by it either. The NPP are waiting for you.

Of course, there are very competent and most senior members who are more than qualified to lead the party, but when day breaks and sunlight shines, every bulb and torchlight must be put off. If you choose to come back, no one should be competing with you. But… It is true that it was supposed to be your turn after Akufo Addo, and in fact, immediately after President Agyakum Kuffuor, you were next in line and no one disputed that. But because of the fact that God does what He likes, the political pendulum swung in the direction of former president Akufo Addo.

You never broke ranks with the party because of the victory of President Akufo Addo because you are a man of rule of law, due process, and democracy. You had exercised restrain and supported his government and his candidacy when you chose not to contest him in the lead up to the 2016 general elections. So, naturally every Time Dick and Harry knew it was supposed to be your turn after Akufo Addo. But we plan, and God plans and God is the best of planners. The plan of God came to past and someone who is not unfit but still in his infancy of leading the party, Dr Bawumia, was selected. Of course, you were hundred and ten percent right to break away for the harassments meted to your polling agents and the embarrassing vetting results the party shamelessly imposed on you.

For someone of your caliber in the eyes of right-thinking Ghanaians it was below par for the party to have treated you in that manner. It wasn’t only demeaning to you, the party had undermined its own prestige, self-esteem and respect and literally shot itself in the foot for the way it porously handled the issue. Naturally and expectedly, you had nothing left but outrage and fury, and you were right.

Yes, you were right to leave the party for good; and it was okay to try to recreate the party that was about to be crashed into the dumpster of political oblivion. And that newly founded party was actually the future of the NPP and the Danquah-Busia-Dambo tradition.

But God always has other plans especially if we didn’t consult Him before venturing into something. It could be quite boomeranging.

I write you this letter to let you know that your departure from the NPP was within the plan of God and so is your return today. It was the possible best way to save the party.

On social media, lately, the comments of some heavyweight members of the party have suggested to the effect that they are yearning for your return. Not because they can’t carry on without you, but a Yoruba proverb says it doesn’t matter who did what, if a man discovers snake and a woman kills it.

At the end of the day it was a threat that was eliminated. It should not matter whether the man should have killed it or the woman. At this juncture, it doesn’t really matter who should be the flag bearer and who should not; the resurrection of your party should be the biggest priority. The Danquah-Busia- Dambo tradition. Therefore, the need to let bygone be bygone.

It is said in our traditional wisdom that even as the teeth and the tongue are pals in the mouth, sometimes they fight. Misunderstanding and even conflict or war happens because we are a human society. But what should distinguish us from those that chew the cud in the jungle with several chambers of stomachs is that, any time disagreements, misunderstandings, conflicts or even wars happen, there should always be some room for reconciliation.

You see, Dr Bawumia, like the young prince Zangina, has a destiny of becoming president of Ghana which he was supposed to lose to president Mahama because of his reckless display of loyalty to the NPP by misconducting himself in a manner which hurt Mahama on behalf of the NPP. And as God was about to fix it for you when Mahama had also stepped beyond some boundaries, your party under Akufo Addo stole the 2020 presidential election which was for Mahama. Basically, because of this political greed and misadventure, God was going to compensate Mahama with Dr Bawumia’s destiny to become president but the same political avarice and greed had brought it back to Dr Bawumia when Mahama probably had also nursed third term ambition by attempting to snatch my destiny.

Mahama, before taking Dr Bawumia’s destiny for losing his mandate to Akufo Addo in the 2020 election, was supposed to fulfill a certain condition but his over ambitions or just pure wickedness made him to violate that condition. I believe that’s why the tables have yet been flipped again in favor of the NPP and Bawumia.

Meanwhile, if Mahama didn’t violate that condition and was going to be successful, your new party was going to be the future of the NPP. But because Dr Bawumia’s destiny has been restored which indicates the revamping or resurrection of the NPP back to political relevance, your party can’t continue.

You have to return to the NPP, not to become a flag bearer but to support Dr Bawumia rescue the tradition. So, the best offer in that capacity is to become Dr Bawumia’s running mate.

And here is where it gets interesting. You are becoming his running mate not only because of constitutional provision but spiritual provision. Which just can’t lead but to help. Per what has been done by your opponents to collapse your party, no person of the Asante or Akan descent can actually lead the party. It was Kennedy Agyappng who could lead if Dr Bawumia was going to fail even though Kennedy’s leadership was going to be a curse upon Ghana and the party. He was going to be exactly like Trump.

Because, Kennedy Agyappng and Dr Bawumia are opposite to each other. If Bawumia is top, Kennedy should be down; if Kennedy is on the east, Bawumia would be in the west, and the vice versa. So, if Bawumia could not turn things around for himself, Kennedy could help bring the NPP to power but devoid of the traditions and ideals. It would have been hell for the party and Ghana which further indicates the death of the NPP and still requires your party’s intervention.

If the NDC or Mahama didn’t make that mistake, the NPP would never have come back to power forever or at least the next 20 years. You could be wondering why I speak with such conviction and as if I possess some oracular powers. Please, I do not. And you may likely associate me with some false prophet hood. I am not a prophet neither do I have any clairvoyant powers. And I am far from sycophancy. It is okay to take a pinch of salt about this issue, that’s normal. But uniting the party and coming back to its rescue cannot be mere addiction to metaphysical delusions, lunacy and perhaps just caustic buffoonery. The possibility of the resurrection and survival of the Danquah-Busia-Dambo tradition through Dr Bawumia is certainly not a delusion.

Burying the hatchet and letting bygones be bygones by cross-fertilizing ideas on how to rescue an irredeemable situation, is certainly not metaphysical lunacy. And that’s why I have been evangelizing to Dr Bawumia what I have been seeing through those visions and dreams. And the need to reach out to you and plead with you to return and help rescue the party.

Like I said, I had been undisguised vociferous critic of the NPP while it was in political power. Not because I couldn't simply rein in my tongue and the vituperative effects of my pen, but it was a certain vision I had sometime ago to write against Dr Bawumia in order to become his friend. I told him about it through countless text messages but he never said anything. I started anyway and the rest they say is history.

Please find below these URL links to these open letters I have been writing him explaining some of the visions and dreams I have been seeing. He hasn’t replied me yet although I have seen some significant steps being taken in that regard.
