Statement on renaming of Kotoka International Airport

Accra International Airport Accra International Airport

As Government prepares to lay the Accra International Airport Bill, 2026 before Parliament, Strategic Aviation Services wishes to respectfully call on Government, Parliament, aviation stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public to embrace the development of General Aviation in Ghana with the same energy, enthusiasm, and national interest that have characterised the ongoing airport renaming debate.

While the naming of our international airport may carry historical, political, and national significance, we must equally recognise that the true value of aviation lies not merely in the names we give our airports, but in the opportunities we create through aviation to transform lives, connect communities, stimulate economic growth, and advance national development.

Aviation must increasingly be embraced as a symbol of progress, innovation, opportunity, and national transformation, rather than viewed predominantly through the narrow lenses of commercial airline operations, airport infrastructure, and political symbolism.

In particular, General Aviation remains one of the most underappreciated yet potentially transformative instruments for advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

From supporting emergency medical evacuations, agricultural development, disaster response, environmental monitoring, tourism, education, skills development, and connectivity to underserved communities, General Aviation has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to Ghana’s socioeconomic transformation.

It can help bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, create opportunities for young people, support entrepreneurship, attract investment, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a progressive aviation nation within Africa.

We must therefore move beyond celebrating aviation infrastructure and begin unlocking the full developmental potential of aviation itself.

Strategic Aviation Services believes that the national enthusiasm currently surrounding the proposed airport renaming presents an important opportunity to initiate a broader conversation about the future of Ghana’s aviation industry, particularly the need for a deliberate national policy framework that recognises, promotes, and supports General Aviation development.

We respectfully urge Government and all stakeholders to channel similar political will, public attention, and institutional commitment towards creating an enabling environment for General Aviation to flourish.

Let us debate the name of our airport but let us be even more passionate about what our airports, airspace, aircraft, and aviation industry can deliver for the Ghanaian people.

Ultimately, the legacy of our aviation sector should not be measured only by the names displayed on our airport terminals, but by the lives transformed, opportunities created, communities connected, and national development achieved.

Ghana deserves an aviation industry that does more than move passengers. It deserves an aviation industry that moves the nation forward.
