Nana B: The experience, energy and mobilisation for the NPP's road to 2028

1. A Long Record of Service to the NPP

Henry Nana Boakye Esq., popularly known as Nana B, brings an extensive record of service to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has been actively involved in the NPP for more than 26 years, serving at different levels of the Party, from the polling station and constituency levels through the regional and national structures.

At the national level, he has served as National Youth Organizer and, since 2022, as National Organizer. He has also served on the National Council, National Executive Committee and National Steering Committee, among other Party assignments. He has therefore gained experience across different areas of the Party and under different national leadership arrangements.

This breadth of experience has given Nana B a deep understanding of the Party’s structures, operations and grassroots dynamics. Combined with his record in youth mobilisation, political communication, grassroots engagement and opposition politics, this experience provides a strong foundation for his candidacy for First National Vice Chairman.

2. A Record of Youth Mobilisation

Nana B’s political journey has been closely associated with youth organisation and mobilisation. His involvement in youth politics dates back to his university days at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), where he founded TESCON and became its first President. He subsequently served as TESCON President at KNUST and extended his student activism to the national student front, championing issues concerning Ghanaian students.

During Sammi Awuku’s tenure as National Youth Organizer, Nana B served as Director of Events and Programmes of the Party’s National Youth Wing, contributing to the mobilisation of the NPP at a time when the Party was in opposition and preparing for the 2016 general elections, which the Party won by an unprecedented margin at the time.

Nana B was subsequently appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Service Authority, a youth-focused institution. In 2018, he resigned from the position to contest for National Youth Organizer and was elected to that office, marking another significant step in his progression from youth activism to national party leadership.

As National Youth Organizer, Nana B was responsible for mobilising the youth for the NPP and supporting the Party’s campaign for the 2020 general election. During his tenure, he introduced initiatives including the “Youth Must Know Series,” the Annual National TESCON Conference and regular workshops for TESCON executives in tertiary institutions across the country.

He also established a job-centre initiative within the office of the National Youth Organizer, through which his office engaged government agencies on employment opportunities for young people. His tenure was further associated with efforts to facilitate opportunities for young people, including international travel and educational scholarships.

Nana B’s record demonstrates a sustained commitment to youth organisation, mobilisation and empowerment, making youth development a defining feature of his political career and national party service.

3. From Youth Organisation to National Mobilisation

When Nana B became National Organizer in 2022, he retained a strong focus on youth engagement while assuming responsibility for a broader organisational mandate. As National Organizer, he coordinated the Party’s special wings operating under the office, including the Youth Wing, Women’s Wing and Nasara Wing.

He also campaigned extensively across the country and engaged the Party’s grassroots structures. This experience gives him an understanding of both the specific needs of the youth and the broader organisational requirements of a national political party.

Another feature of Nana B’s candidacy is the combination of youth and accumulated political experience. From TESCON and student activism to the National Youth Wing and later the National Organizer’s office, youth mobilisation has remained a consistent feature of his political career. This background has enabled him to maintain relationships with a generation of young party activists who have followed his political journey from the university level into national party leadership.

His youth leadership also extended beyond Ghana. He was overwhelmingly elected Vice Chairman of the International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), the youth wing of the International Democrat Union (IDU), a global alliance of centre-right political parties with membership in more than 55 countries.

4. Experience From Two National Election Cycles

Nana B brings valuable experience from two successive general-election cycles, having served as National Youth Organizer during the 2020 general election and National Organizer during the 2024 general election. This gives him direct experience in national campaign organisation, mobilisation, grassroots coordination and the challenges of contesting elections from both government and opposition.

The NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat was subsequently examined by the Election Review Committee chaired by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, alongside other post-election assessments, including assessments by Global Info Analytics and KAS International. The Oquaye Committee and the other assessments identified a number of factors associated with the Party’s defeat, including incumbency fatigue, unpopular government policies and arrogance of power.

As National Organizer, Nana B was vocal in raising concerns about the conduct of some government appointees and expressing strong reservations about certain government policies. He also advocated corrective measures ahead of the 2024 elections. Many regard these interventions as evidence that Nana B recognised some of the political challenges confronting the Party and sought to have them addressed before the elections.

Unfortunately, those concerns were not sufficiently acted upon before the general elections. This experience provides important lessons for the NPP as it prepares for 2028, and Nana B, having served at the centre of the Party’s organisation during both the 2020 and 2024 general elections, brings first-hand knowledge of those lessons.

5. Political, Legal and Communications Experience

Beyond youth mobilisation and party organisation, Nana B has built substantial experience in political communication, legal affairs and election administration. He has served as a member of the NPP National Communications Team and the Party’s legal team and was involved in the Party’s 2020 Presidential Election Petition.

His other responsibilities include serving as Chairman of the Parliamentary Candidates Vetting Committee for the Ashanti Region and Vice Chairman of the 2025 National Delegates Conference.

Nana B has also served on the National Council, National Executive Committee and National Steering Committee, giving him broad exposure to the Party’s decision-making and organisational structures.

His record therefore brings together political organisation, communications, legal experience, election administration and national party leadership — a combination of experience to the office of First National Vice Chairman.

6. A Visible Voice in Opposition

Since the NPP returned to opposition, Nana B has remained highly visible in the Party’s public communication and accountability activities. He has organised, led and actively participated in press conferences, demonstrations, protests, petitions and stakeholder engagements on issues concerning governance and democratic accountability.

He has also engaged the diplomatic community and other key governance stakeholders on matters that he and the Party have raised concerning Ghana’s democratic governance and the treatment of political opponents and dissenting voices.

Through these interventions, Nana B has consistently drawn public and international attention to issues characterised as political persecution, executive interference with independent state institutions, restrictions on dissent and the erosion of democratic freedoms.

His engagements have included concerns surrounding developments within the judiciary and the removal of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, by President Mahama, as well as the broader protection of democratic institutions and freedoms.

Beyond the substance of the individual issues he has consistently raised, Nana B’s activism has helped maintain a visible and active opposition presence for the NPP. His regular press engagements, protests, petitions and stakeholder activities have kept the Party in the national conversation and provided a platform for the Party to articulate its positions on governance and accountability.

This clearly represents an important function of opposition politics: holding government to account, challenging policies with which the Party disagrees and ensuring that issues of public interest remain firmly on the national agenda. In this regard, Nana B has played a prominent role in giving the NPP a strong and visible voice in opposition.

7. A Strong Communicator in Opposition

Nana B has established himself as one of the NPP’s prominent national communicators. He has consistently defended the Party’s record and articulated its positions through the media, press conferences and public engagements.

His background as a lawyer, communicator and party organiser has enabled him to combine political messaging with a strong understanding of the issues he addresses.

This combination of communication, legal and organisational experience is an important part of the record Nana B brings to the position of First National Vice Chairman, particularly in engaging the Party’s grassroots, national structures and the wider Ghanaian public.

8. Institutional Memory Matters

Institutional memory assumes particular importance as the NPP prepares for a new national leadership structure. The Party is seeking to rebuild after the 2024 election while preparing for the 2028 contest. In this context, the experience of officers who have served through previous election cycles can provide valuable continuity and institutional knowledge.

The transition to a new leadership team need not mean losing the experience accumulated by the existing national officers. Retaining some experienced officers alongside newly elected ones can help preserve institutional memory, provide continuity and ensure that lessons from previous election cycles, particularly the 2024 election, remain available to the incoming leadership.

Nana B is uniquely positioned in this regard. Having served as National Youth Organizer during the 2020 general election and National Organizer during the 2024 election, he brings direct experience from two successive national election cycles.

His continued service at the national level would therefore provide the incoming leadership with institutional knowledge of the Party’s structures, operations, campaign organisation and grassroots mobilisation.

For the NPP, the retention of experienced national officers alongside new leadership offers an opportunity to combine renewal with continuity. Nana B’s experience from the 2020 and 2024 elections constitutes an important institutional resource as the Party prepares for the road to 2028.

9. A Bridge Between Experience and Renewal

The argument for Nana B’s candidacy ultimately rests on the combination of experience, youth, mobilisation and institutional memory. He has moved from student and youth activism to national youth leadership and subsequently to the office of National Organizer.

He has participated in national campaigns, worked with the Party’s grassroots structures, coordinated its special wings, engaged in opposition activities and served in the Party’s legal and communications structures. These experiences provide a basis for continuity as the NPP transitions to a new national leadership team and begins preparations for 2028.

The choice before delegates on Saturday, October 3, 2026, will therefore involve consideration of the respective records, experience and programmes of the candidates for First National Vice Chairman. Nana B’s record offers delegates a clearly identifiable combination of long-term party service, youth mobilisation, national organisational experience and direct participation in the Party’s recent electoral cycles.

10. Conclusion

The case for Nana B is ultimately a case for experience, continuity, energy and commitment to the NPP. For more than two decades, he has served the Party at different levels, including almost a decade in national leadership as National Youth Organizer and subsequently as National Organizer.

His record spans youth mobilisation, grassroots organisation, national campaigns, opposition activism, political communication, legal work and service across the Party’s structures. He also brings first-hand experience from the 2020 and 2024 general elections and the lessons they hold for the Party’s future.

As the NPP prepares for a new national leadership team and the 2028 election, renewal and institutional continuity can go hand in hand. Nana B represents a bridge between experience and renewal, youth and maturity, mobilisation and organisation.

Ultimately, the decision belongs to the delegates. His long record of national Party service, organisational experience and participation in two recent general-election cycles provides important considerations as delegates choose the next First National Vice Chairman.

Assalamu alaikum.
