Whereas the IGP himself and his POMAB members will not be at the forefront to fight crime, they have ultimate responsibility to ensure that they adequately protect and equip police officers to ensure that police officers do not die like houseflies upon responding to violent crimes like robbery.

"One of the most terrible crimes to fight in this country is robbery. Fighting robbery comes with cost, and the cost may include lives of police officers.
Robbery has claimed the lives of police officers more than any crime in this country.
It is the single most source of police casualties in this country.

I have been in the forefronts myself and know how it is to return from scenes having had encounters with robbers.

I still remember those times that we would respond to robbery calls bare‑chested and would return with lifeless bodies of fellow police officers.

The chances of police officers being killed while responding to robbery was so high.I felt we were not being protected enough to protect the citizens as we ought to protect them, so I would speak out.

I started writing and even wrote open letters to presidents and bemoaned the rate at which police officers are dying in line of duty. I called the presidents to protect the police so that the police will be in a better position to protect the citizens and their properties.

Speaking up in the manner I did came with cost.

I endured all kinds of vindictiveness and victimisations, and for 10 years I was subjected to all kinds of disciplinary actions. My promotions were delayed while my mates went ahead in their ranks.

I was always in court fighting to save my career in the police simply because I called the state to protect the police as it ought to do.

In one of the moments, I was being paraded at the police headquarters for writing an open letter to a president, I ran into CT and his words were simple.

We may have problems with the way and manner you are raising the issues but you are right on every point you raise. CT does not talk much, so he concluded the conversation by saying that maybe one day we will get the opportunity to write some of these things. My brother, it is well.Ten years later,

I would watch CT becoming the IGP and brazenly confronting robbery more than I have seen all my entire life in the police. I would watch the police taking down dangerous robbery networks in dangerous clashes but yet to hear a report that a police officer has died while responding to robbery.

Today, there is more motivation to fight robbery than I have seen all my life in the police.

That is not to say there will not be casualties, but the most important thing is to ensure that police officers dying in line of duty is reduced to the barest minimum.
