As Ghana heads toward another election, many citizens are asking a simple but uncomfortable question: Why does the New Patriotic Party (NPP) believe it deserves another mandate when it has not yet accounted for the controversies that happened under its watch?
The party is campaigning aggressively, but the scandals from its administration, financial mismanagement, galamsey complicity, and internal corruption, remain unresolved. Instead of apologizing to the nation, the NPP is acting as though nothing happened.
Ken Ofori-Atta and the Financial Scandals
Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta presided over decisions that pushed Ghana into one of its worst economic crises. From ballooning debt to the controversial Agyapa deal and Databank conflicts of interest, the public still demands answers.
And let’s be honest: a finance minister does not operate without the president’s approval.
So how is it possible that President Akufo-Addo claims innocence?
Galamsey and the Party’s Internal Complicity
The NPP government claimed to be fighting galamsey, yet some of its own officials were linked to the crisis. Even the party chairman’s name surfaced in galamsey-related discussions. And many Ghanaians remember Akufo-Addo’s shocking words: “I am not here to prosecute party people.”
How can you fight illegal mining when you refuse to hold your own people accountable?
What Did the President and Vice President Know?
It is impossible for galamsey networks to thrive and billions to be mismanaged without political protection. It is impossible for the economy to collapse without the knowledge of the President and the Vice President, who chaired the Economic Management Team.
Why No Apology?
Instead of humility, the NPP is presenting arrogance. Instead of accountability, the party offers slogans. If the NPP genuinely wants another term, it must first:
•Admit wrongdoing
•Apologize to Ghanaians
•Explain how it will prevent these failures from repeating
Ghanaians are watching. And this time, memory will decide the vote.
