AIDS/SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES FACILITIES PROVIDED AT ADABRAKA POLY CLINIC

The Minister of Health, Dr.. Eunice Brookman-Amissah and the Canadian Minister for International Development Agencies, Miss Diane Marleau have inspected facilities for AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases at the Adabraka Poly Clinic. The project is part of a wider regional programme which aims at cutting the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases within the West Africa sub-region. CIDA will contribute three point one million dollars to the project over the next three years. Dr.. Brookman-Amissah said, the project will soon be extended to other regions beginning from the Eastern Region. She said they are working closely with prostitutes and people with sexually transmitted diseases since they are more prone to contract HIV/AIDS. Dr.. Brookman-Amissah said the Clinic is being well patronised, since the whole system is private. In response to an appeal by the patients of the Clinic for assistance to engage in income generating activities, Miss Marleau said they will be considered with small loans to help them stop prostitution. She said it is important to make the people aware that some of the diseases are preventable. Miss Marleau commended the staff of the Clinic for making the programme a success. Reacting to a publication in a National Daily that AIDS can be transmitted through sweat, the Programme Manager of the Project, Dr.. Lawson Ahadzie, said although minute quantities of the virus could be found in sweat and saliva, there is no evidence so far that shows, that they are a mode of transmission. End
