Samia Nkrumah's development plans for Ghana

Nowadays, nobody mentions Ghana without talking about corruption. Corruption has become such a phenomenon! For many, a way of life. In Ghana, bribing one’s way in and out isn’t something uncommon. It’s part of the daily experience! So, many have grown accustomed to it, albeit inconvenient. I don’t necessarily agree with those who engage in the act of bribe-taking! Let me be absolutely clear on this. I believe it’s inappropriate! However, I do understand. Life--in Ghana--isn’t made of roses! Quite recently, Atta Mills visited Tema Harbor. Actually, the visit was inspired after seeing the Anas undercover-report-video. I am sure that most of you have seen the footage in question. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, I would suggest that you visit You-tube. It’s on there! Anyway, Mills was anything but happy. He was furious like a woman scorned. Rightfully so!

I, for one, was expecting him to offer a solution to the escalating bribery activities at the harbor. I was left disappointed! Mills had nothing meaningful to say to the personnel. His words of caution had no content whatsoever. Remember, it’s impossible to eradicate corruption with mere words. To me, understanding what causes it is what sets the stage for a solution. In the Netherlands, for instance, corruption is present. Please, make no mistake about it! However, it’s in the bare minimum. I should know. I live here! And, why is that? It’s because the government takes good-care of the governed. There’s a circulation of wealth! As a result, the lives of the governed are made comfortable and easy. You have institutions, which aid and abet the citizenry. The people aren’t left to do everything by themselves. No! Everybody is assisted in one form or the other! The way things ought to be in a civilized society!

Here, in the Netherlands, children are financially assisted by the government. Their parents are given a certain amount of money every three-months. This is meant to ease the parental burden a bit! As far as education is concerned, there are several institutions--which assist parents with low income so that their children could be educated. You also have the temporary unemployed. For them, a welfare institution has been created. This institution caters to them until employment becomes appropriate! Commodities, how affordable are they over here? Well, very affordable if you ask me! The prices of commodities are customer friendly. But then, the competitiveness of the market would have it no other way. So, the prices better be reasonable. Here, salaries--if carefully managed, could leave you something to save at the end of each month. Not bad for a country without oil and gold! What about housing? Well, anybody with a work-contract could purchase a home. With the help from the bank, of course! You pay off your property on a monthly basis.

I could go on and on! Dear reader, do you think that corruption could flourish in such a country? No, not quite! It has no reason to, nor is it necessary! The record has shown. The new age mantra is copy! Unlike education, copy is an action--which could be done without exhausting the brain. In order words, you don’t have to be a genius to copy. At least, not necessarily. You could do so without thinking too much! As Ghanaians, we are very good, when it comes to copying things. I have keenly observed! But then, human behaviour is based on imitation. So, this is not a new revelation from me at all. Let’s imitate! Let’s imitate the countries, which have created these aforementioned institutions for their people. Holland is a great example! That said, none of these aforementioned institutions could be realized without the right leader or political party in place. The ruling party and the opposition couldn't do it! Obviously, they couldn’t be bothered.

Remember, they both had eight years each. And, what did we see? The rise of armed-robbery in the country due to unemployment. Most of our national companies were sold off for a mere pittance. Our airline was bankrupted. Remember the 10% oil deal? How foolish was that? As of the moment, Ghana has overtaken Nigeria as the e-fraud capital of the world. Our natural resources are in the hands of foreign companies. Dear reader, how long do we want this madness and incompetence to continue? Right now, Samia Nkrumah is one of the few politicians out there who could be trusted to get the job done. As a politician, her heart and mind is in the right place. Not only does she speak of the hurt of the people, she's out there and making a difference as well. In fact, the creation of these aforementioned institutions is the reason why she went into politics. They are part of her development plans for this country. So, let's support her, shall we? This country needs her leadership to save itself!
