Columnist: The Emperor

Ms Rawlings will clean up Kufour’s mess!

By no means is this article intended to ridicule our sitting President. Let me be absolutely clear on this! I believe that Mills is a good man. His heart and mind is in the right place. Therefore, for a person who holds him highly, I will exercise caution in my reproach of him. The President deserves to be respected, just like everybody else! Having said this, Mills' presidency hasn't been exemplary. I don't know about you, but it hasn't been to me. But then, I suspected from the word go that his selection may have been a mistake. To be precise, his selection to be our President. Ever since Mills' entrance into our higher office, certain decisions have been made, which should've been avoided. For instance, the decision to increase taxes on imported commodities shouldn't have been made. Market-protectionism has its place, alright! Please, don’t get me wrong. However, in a laissez-faire market-economy; market-protectionism, without consumer-protectionism--could lead to no good. The record has shown!

The decision to hire foreign contractors to build houses for us should've been discouraged. I am sure that most of you would agree. We have the expertise and the know-how! This is the 21st century, for crying out loud. So, to me, it shouldn't have been necessary at all. if anything, this project should've gone to one of our many brilliant contractors. This is what domestication is all about. Investing in your own! The completion of this project would've showcased our architectural brilliance. For our dear country, such an advertisement would've come in handy! The rest of the world would’ve taken notice of our ingenuity. The collateralization of our oil for loan. What about it? To tell the truth, I was very upset, when the news broke that such a decision has been passed in parliament. My initial reaction was; when are we ever going to learn? A country like Ghana doesn't need to borrow! She has no reason to. Our resources, if carefully managed, should be able to sustain us financially! Last but not least, Atta Mills calls himself an Nrumahist. So, by now, our International airport should’ve undergone a name change, but no. Kotoka’s bloody name is still there!

In fact, my complaints about Mills' administration are many, and rightfully so. During the 2008 presidential election, the NDC Party made lots of promises to the electorate. Some of these promises have been fulfilled! Others have yet to see the light of day. The NDC promised that when it comes to power, it will set up a committee to investigate the corruption, which transpired under Kufour's watch. We know that the previous government accomplished many things. This is undisputed! For instance, the NPP government doubled our gross domestic product from $3.74 billion to $7.34 billion. A remarkable accomplishment, without a doubt! But, what does it mean in simple terms? It means that the country made lots of monies from its trade activities. Monies which should’ve been put into good use, of course! Regrettably, this wasn’t the case. The monies came in and disappeared without a trace! The IMF had to be called to the rescue, for nothing was left in the treasury. Dear reader, nothing was saved!

So, where did our monies go? Who are the looters who looted the treasury dry? We know that lots of NPP parliamentarians became exceedingly rich overnight. This is not a secret! So, by now, most of these parliamentarians should've been brought to the fore to be interrogated. Most of them should've had their assets and bank-accounts frozen. Those found guilty by the committee should've been put in jail. This is what the NDC promised! They promised that they would clean house if elected to power.
Well, three years have come and gone. And, what do we see? Nothing! President Mills refuses to do anything. He has refused to set up a committee. As yet, no plans have been made or put in motion, which would bring these criminals to justice. So, as Ghanaians, what are we supposed to do? Remember, some of our children are studying under trees due to the lack of funds. Unnecessary poverty has become the fate of many! Should we sit and do nothing, whilst these thieves parade around with our monies? I hope that we aren't that foolish!

Mills has proven to be unwilling to bring us justice. I don’t think that Nana Akuffo Addo, the Akan supremacist, would even bother! Samia Nkrumah wont be running for the presidency. At least, not to my knowledge. This leaves us with just one alternative; Ms Nana Konadu Rawlings. Like her or not, this woman means business. She will clean up Kufour’s mess. I am sure of it! As for you thieves who stole under Kufour’s watch, what are y’all going to do, when Mills is no longer around to grant you clemency or protection? Ms Rawlings wont be merciful. Remember that! But then, you pigs don’t deserve any.
