Techiman Hosts Book Fair

Techiman (Brong Ahafo), 6 Nov. A four-day book fair for first and second cycle schools in the Techiman district has opened at Techiman. The fair is being organised by the Ghana Book Publishers Association and the Children's Literature Foundation (CLF) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service. It offers the opportunity for pupils, students and the general public to buy textbooks, supplementary readers, among others, from a wide range of publishers at moderate prices with 15 per cent discount. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs Mary Boye, president of CLF, said the first objective of the fair is to draw the attention of parents, teachers and all other adults interested in the educational development of children, to books. The other purpose is to motivate teachers to encourage children to read widely beyond their textbooks. Mrs Boye said the educational outlook of Ghanaians must reflect the rapid economic, sociological and technological changes which have made the world a global village. She said school libraries are one sure way of making books readily available to children. Mr C.K. Segbawu, President of Ghana book publishers association, said the literacy level of a community or country has become an acceptable index of development because development depends on access to information. Ten publishers, whose books are on display are the Bureau of Ghana languages, Afram Publications, Sedco Publishing Limited, Zoe Book House, Sam Woode Limited, Asempa publishers, Step Publishers, Minerva Books and stationery supplies, All Goodbooks Limited and Adom Books and Supplies.
