Government should involve psychology students in fighting coronavirus

Over the years we speak about and acknowledge the benefits of disciplines like medicine, sports, finance, academia, etc. but behind the scenes, working hard and playing a major role to make these disciplines firm and grow is psychology.

There are countless benefits of psychology that we don't just believe but we know can be key in improving and managing the crisis situation that Ghana, our homeland is facing as a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

It's about time that practitioners in the field of psychology came together as a unit and did what they know how to do best. That is, being there for both the person and the mind. We're all in this crisis together and this deadly disease as we all know is no respecter of persons.

We, therefore, call on the government to involve psychologists in the journey they're undertaking and the decisions to be made through to the last handshake that will be given to the last person to recover.

Fear, panic, depression, and anxiety are normal expressions an individual experiences but with coronavirus in the picture, one needs all the help to overcome them before they affect both the physiological and mental health of the individual.

Drawing expertise from the psychology discipline will be a healthy approach to the crippling situation our nation is battling.

As psychology students, we are calling on the government to get all involved most especially the departments of psychology and its students from the various tertiary institutions who are ever ready to give their support to their motherland, Ghana.
