Government will today, December, 14, 2018 announce a new policy framework for regularising and reforming mining activities in Ghana.

The frameworks according to the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah does not necessarily mean the lifting of the 21 months ban on illegal small scale mining but a policy frame work to ensure that operators in the small scale mining industry operate within the confines of the new policy framework.

The announcement comes 21 months after a ban was imposed on illegal, irresponsible as well as small scale mining activities in the country.

“It is our expectation that stakeholders and the general public will continue to cooperate with authorities even as this new phase is rolled out” the Minister noted during Sunday bi-weekly press briefings in Takoradi.

Government, in 2017 suspended artisanal and small scale mining activities in the country to enable it come out with a comprehensive structure and regulation for sustainable mining, but the government is yet to normalize activities in the sector after its intervention.
