In an era where Ghana’s insurance sector is evolving to meet the demands of a modern economy, few names stand out as prominently as Salifu Abubakari, widely known as Godmar. With over 17 years of experience spanning insurance practice, academia, and corporate leadership, he has steadily built a reputation as one of the industry’s most dynamic and forward-thinking figures.

From humble beginnings to leading one of Ghana’s notable insurance firms, his journey reflects discipline, strategic growth, and an unwavering commitment to professional development.

Early Life and Roots

Born on July 29, 1985, in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Salifu Abubakari traces his roots to Nadowli-Kaleo in the Upper West Region of Ghana. Raised in a large family by his parents, Ibrahim Salifu (now deceased) and Esther Donkor (Agyakum), he grew up with strong values grounded in resilience, faith, and community. A practicing Muslim, his upbringing has played a significant role in shaping his leadership style and ethical outlook.

Academic Pursuit and Intellectual Growth

Salifu’s academic journey reflects a deep commitment to continuous learning and specialization. He began his tertiary education at Sunyani Technical University, earning an Advanced Diploma in Sales and Marketing Management (UK). He later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing (Business Administration) from the University of Cape Coast through Baptist University College.

Determined to deepen his expertise, he pursued a Master of Science degree in Insurance and Business Continuity at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). His academic ambition extended beyond Ghana, leading him to obtain an international Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Management from UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia. He is currently advancing his academic journey with a doctoral program at the same institution.

Professional Credentials and Industry Authority

A firm believer in professional excellence, Salifu has earned some of the most respected certifications in the global insurance industry. He is a Chartered Insurer (Ghana), a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU, USA), and an Associate in Risk Management (ARM, USA). These credentials not only underscore his technical expertise but also position him among a select group of highly qualified insurance professionals in the region.

A Career Defined by Growth and Impact

Salifu’s professional journey began at Glico Life Insurance, where he worked as an agent, gaining firsthand experience in client engagement and sales. His career trajectory soon advanced when he joined KEK Insurance Brokers Limited as a Senior Broking and Marketing Officer.

He later moved to Regency Alliance Insurance Company, serving as Marketing Manager for over three years. However, it was at Priority Insurance Limited that he made some of his most significant contributions.

At Priority Insurance Ltd, Salifu rose through the ranks, serving as Regional Manager for both Takoradi and Kumasi branches before becoming Head of Marketing and Business Development, and eventually General Manager for Marketing and Business Development.

In this role, he led transformative initiatives in marketing strategy, brand positioning, and customer engagement. His efforts contributed to the company’s growth and recognition, including its ranking under the Ghana Club 100. He also championed digital transformation and insurance awareness campaigns, helping to bridge the gap between insurers and the public.

Beyond operational leadership, he played a key role in internal development, serving on the Technical Board and Manual Review Committee, and chairing the Educational Committee—where he prioritized staff training and capacity building. In February 2026, Salifu Abubakari reached a major milestone in his career when he was appointed Managing Director of Activa International Insurance Ghana Ltd, marking a new chapter in his leadership journey.

Bridging Industry and Academia

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Salifu remains deeply committed to education and knowledge-sharing. He serves as a lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Ghana Insurance College, where he contributes to training the next generation of insurance professionals.

His passion for education extends to professional bodies, where he has held several influential roles.

He currently serves as President of the CPCU Society, West Africa Chapter, having previously held the position of Vice President. He is also Vice Chair of the CPCU Global Virtual Committee, a member of the Ghana Insurers Association, and a contributor to GIZ’s Insurance Awareness Coordinating Group.

Through these platforms, he continues to influence policy dialogue, promote industry standards, and advance insurance education across the region.

Recognition and Industry Influence

Salifu’s contributions have not goneh unnoticed. He has received nominations for Young Insurance Professional of the Year (2023) and Insurance Professional of the Year (2024) at the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana Excellence Awards. These recognitions highlight his growing influence and the impact of his work within Ghana’s insurance landscape.

A Life Beyond the Boardroom

Outside his professional life, Salifu Abubakari is a devoted family man. He is married to Safiatu Abdullia, and together they have six children. Despite his demanding career, he maintains a strong commitment to family and personal values.
