Did charter house get the red carpet right

at the 14th edition of the VGMA’S?

It was Saturday 18th may, the rescheduled date for one of the most anticipated annual events in the Ghanaian entertainment calendar, the 14TH edition of the Vodafone sponsored Ghana music awards (VGMA), the rescheduling of the event was necessitated due to the renovation of the grand hall of the Accra conference centre which has been the preferred venue for this esteemed event for many years now.

As expected, charter house did their usual best to assemble all the crème de la crème of the music industry both within the country and in the Diaspora on the bill for the night with the likes of VIP, Sarkordie, R2Bees, Chris waddle, 4×4, kwaw kesse, Afyia, EL, Wizkid and even old stars like Akatakyie and Kontihene all making the cut. Now, with all the stars that were expected to graze the stage, one would have expected that aspect of the show to be the most talked about but interestingly, it was the red carpet section that grabbed all the headlines.

The red carpet since its inception has fast developed into the favorite part of the event for most VGMA fans as they get to see their favorite celebrities display their sense of beauty, style and fashion. However, contrary to the expectations of most fans of the red carpet, this year’s package was a complete fiasco as it was largely ruined by the collective abbysmal display of both the camera crew, the directors, the stars themselves and most disappointedly the two hosts.

To start with, the section was being hosted by two very famous personalities in the Ghanaian entertainment scene in the persons of Benny Eshun jnr a.k.a Benny blanko a seasoned presenter and Confidence Haugen one of Gh’s representatives in the 2011 edition of the big brother star game and also the C.E.O of the popular Aphrodisiac night club. Based on the high and lofty standards of the two host of the red carpet section, one would have expected them to perform far better than they did. Confidence the female host, was in an extra ordinarily hyperactive mood, asking questions which had absolutely nothing to do with the nights show, laughing indiscriminately as though she had mistakenly entered a males washroom, fidgeting and vibrating all over the place like a Nokia 3310 phone and most unpardonably, allowing her apparently unwanted sweat which was dripping across her face to mess up her makeup which clearly made her look like an ancient baboon, it was certainly a night she will wish to forget. Benny Blanko on his part appeared in his usual fine boy, sleek and sexy nature but wored a slightly oversized suit which I believe he could have done better. He was occasionally caught staring at the stars in a confused manner obviously not knowing who to interview and who not to interview, it’s clearly not his thing. Nonetheless the two hosts clearly made a mess of themselves and the show at large.

The camera crew and the directors also did their possible best to contribute to the whole fiasco as they clearly failed to properly position and capture the scenes very well as in most instances they only showed half images (only upper or lower parts of the stars) when viewers were expecting to see every little details of the appearances of the celebrities, hmmm! The camera crew clearly haven’t gotten there yet. The stars themselves did not do much to help the seemingly hopeless scenes on display as most of them certainly did not do their home work well as to what to put on or what not to put on. However, a few of them were able to live up to expectation with some flashy and innovative sense of fashion and style and to them I say big ups (sarkodie, Afya, Kesse, Naa Ashorkor, Nadia, Abbi, Fuse and Selasie, Chris Attoh, Shatter Walle, D-black, Nana Ama Mc Brown, R 2 bees et’al ).

Aside the red carpet fiasco, I think for the very first time in many attempts charter house got it right this time round. The lightening on stage was on point, the presenters K.O.D and Easy were impeccable and the artist really thrilled the fans especially the surprise appearance of Akatakyie and Kontihene. The event can only get better especially the red carpet section and we look to the future.
