Cost of web design in Ghana and why most SMEs don't need a complex website

Complex and expensive does not always equal return on investment Complex and expensive does not always equal return on investment

What goes into the cost of web design in Ghana, and why should you care as a business owner or marketing manager? This article discusses what matters most when taking your business online, and how to get the needed results while spending only what is required.

When it comes to web design for SMEs, complex and expensive does not always equal return on investment. I know for a fact that many Ghanaian business owners still believe that a good website must be expensive or loaded with all sorts of features. Unfortunately, many web designers have contributed to this misinformation.

On the contrary, most small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) don’t need a massive or complicated platform to do well online. What matters most is having a clean, fast, and credible website that clearly shows what you offer and makes it easy for people to contact you.

I have been building websites since 2010, and working on client sites since we started EnspireFX Websites in 2019. We’ve worked with many businesses that have spent thousands on Ghana cedis on websites that didn’t even match their actual needs.

The truth is, for most SMEs, a simple, well-built website delivers better results than an overdesigned one. Let’s look at what really matters, what web design in Ghana actually costs, and why I recommend keeping things simple and efficient.

What goes into the cost of web design in Ghana

Website design prices in Ghana range widely - from around GH¢2,000 for a professional one-page site to about GH¢20,000 for a fully custom-built platform. The difference usually depends on the type of website, features, and the level of development involved.

If your goal is to establish a quick and professional online presence, something that shows who you are, what you do, and how to contact you, then a one-pager - is normally up to 3 pages - is usually enough. It’s fast to build, affordable, and includes everything you need to look credible online.

You can choose between a WordPress build (which you can manage yourself) or a custom-coded version for a more technical setup.

If you want a bit more space to share your story or services, our Startup Business Website package starts at GH¢3,490 and includes up to five pages. For businesses that need unique systems or integrations, our fully custom-coded websites for startups start around GH¢10,500 and are built from the ground up using frameworks like Laravel.

Why most businesses don’t need complicated websites

The problem I have seen around has been the assumption that the more complicated and flashy a website is, the more effective it’ll be. Even some web designers confuse flashy animations with interactivity. But that’s not how it works.

A good website isn’t about the number of pages, animations or the features — it’s about clarity, speed, and search visibility. At the end of the day, what brings results? That's what matters most.

Now, here’s why a simpler website often works better:

1. Customers want information, not features

Most visitors come to your website looking for quick answers: what you do, how you do it, and how to reach you. They also need a reason to choose you over your competitor. A clean, focused site helps them get that information fast.

2. Maintenance should be simple

Big, complex websites need constant updates and can easily break when plugins or scripts conflict. A small business should spend its time serving customers, not fixing website errors. WordPress websites, which we use for most clients, are easy to update and manage.

3. You can add more later

You don’t have to start with everything at once. A blog, an online store, or a booking system can always come later. What matters is launching a professional website now and growing from there.

The age of your domain is a factor of authority. EnspireFX ranks number one on Google for users searching for web design services, partly because of how long we have been improving our website.

By all means, take your business online, but it can be done without all that complexity, and of course, without breaking the bank.

4. Speed and conversion matter more than size

A lightweight website that loads faster and keeps visitors engaged with your services is what you need.. When your site loads quickly and works well on mobile, it builds trust - a major element that converts visitors into customers.

Is it possible you only need a one-pager website?

1. Homepage / Landing Page: The main conversion space. It introduces your brand, highlights your services, and directs visitors to take action: calling, booking, placing an order, or subscribing.

2. About Page: This section tells your story and improves your site’s Organisations Schema: a key SEO element that helps Google and other web engine crawlers recognise your business as a legitimate entity.

3. Contact Page: Built for Local SEO Schema, this page helps your business appear in local search results and on Google Maps. It includes contact details, a form, and direct links to WhatsApp or email. One way to tell a fishy website is how well its contact page is built.

Together, these pages create a solid, SEO-friendly foundation for any business website. They cover brand credibility, lead generation, and local search visibility; the three things that actually drive growth online.

Non-negotiable features for every SME business website

Every business website, comes packed with everything your business needs to perform well online. It's important to not just design web pages, but we build digital tools that help the business’s sales, marketing, customer relations or customer service.

So here are the features you need in your website;

● Mobile-first, responsive design for all devices. This means how your website looks on mobile devices is even more important than how it looks on desktops, I dare say.

● SEO-ready structure and metadata setup. Each page must be optimised to show up on search engines

● Professional business emails tied to your domain. There are some industries where you won't be taken seriously if you’re still using Gmail and Yahoo emails.

● SSL certificate for website security (HTTPS)

● WhatsApp chat and contact form integration

● Social media and Google Maps linking

● Website speed optimisation

● Google Analytics and Search Console setup

● Pop-up or newsletter sign-up for lead capture

● Website security and daily full-site backups

These features make your website fast, secure, and ready to rank on search engines like Google, Bing, and other AI platforms

When to consider a custom-coded website

Some businesses need more than a basic site. If you’re running a medium to large online store, managing bookings, or offering dashboards and user accounts, a custom-coded website makes sense.

Custom-built websites are faster, more secure, and more flexible for scaling. They’re ideal for companies planning to expand or integrate complex features.

Many web developers, build custom sites using Laravel, Bootstrap, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. The results are always clean sites, high-performing and long-term scalability.

I will leave you and your technical team to decide the best approach for your business, but for most SMEs, it is to start small and grow strategically.

Begin with a simple, fast, professional website that clearly communicates your brand and allows you to collect leads. Once your business grows, you can always expand your website’s features and structure.
