GHOneTV's Alice Aryeetey shortlisted for Foreign Press Awards 2018

GHOne News’ award winning journalist, Alice Aryeetey has been shortlisted among 12 young journalists across the world for the sixth Thomson foundation young journalist award as part of the annual prestigious Foreign Press Association (FPA) Media Awards.

The award is dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious young journalists from across the globe.

The Judges praised Alice’s courageous, groundbreaking and comprehensive report, “Drug Lords of Old Fadama” as a piece that has resonance across the world.

The story tells how substance abuse and addiction continue to eat into the Ghanaian society, with many of the youth imprisoned by addiction, while few others are fighting hard to liberate themselves from addiction.

Announcing the 12 shortlist on the Thomson Foundation website, the story among a few others, received special mention:

“Child brides of China sold for “less than the price of a buffalo”, once-ostracized transgender candidates now running for Pakistan's parliament, Ghanaian youths and the alarming rate of drug abuse, and judges soliciting bribes to release detainees from Liberia’s prisons, are among the stories that have made the shortlist for the sixth Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award”. Judges of the award look for stories that are revelatory, prompt public debate and have led to, or have the potential to lead to, positive change in society.

Independent judges at the FPA will select the three finalists from the 12 entrants on the shortlist to be revealed in October, who will be vying for the coveted Young Journalist Award on 26th November at the prestigious FPA Awards gala dinner in London.

Alice Aryeetey, with an interest in reporting on social and developmental issues, last year won two awards at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards for being the Best in reporting on Disability and also producing the best TV report on education.

In 2015, she also won a GJA award for being the best in reporting on Disability.

Alice holds a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
