Court remands mechanic in custody for fraud

Mankranso (Ash), April.30, GNA - The Mankranso magistrate court on Monday granted a 34-year old mechanic of Abuakwa five million cedis bail in a fraud case.

John Boakye, mechanic, pleaded not guilty and will re-appear on May 4, 2004.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Joseph Gabienu told the court that about two months ago, one Kwame Peter and his two friends took a car to the workshop of the accused at Sofoline in Kumasi to be repaired.

He said while there, Kwame Peter discussed with the accused the possibility of buying a second hand Hyundai excel saloon car to which the accused assured him that he could get him one.

Inspector Gabienu said three days after their discussions, the accused went to Kwame Peter and told him that he had paid for the car they discussed about so Peter should give him five million cedis and come for the car in his house the next day.

He said Kwame Peter paid the accused the five million cedis but saw no car when he went to collect it and so the following day he (complainant) went to the accused's house with his two friends to demand his money but to no avail.

Inspector Gabienu said all efforts to collect the money from the accused failed and so the case was reported to the police who arrested him and charged him with the offence. 30 April 04
