KIDDAFEST gains international dimension

Over 300 children from Nigeria and other African countries will participate in this year's KIDDAFEST, scheduled for December 17 to December 21.

The Nigerian Ministry of Education has confirmed that about six schools and child performers would come from Nigeria to participate.

This was announced by Professor Komla Amoaku, Executive Director of the National Theatre, at the 10th Anniversary Launch of KIDDAFEST in Accra on Wednesday.

Professor Komla Amoaku said Togo and Benin were among other countries within the Sub-Region that would participate.

He said KIDDAFST 2003 was dedicated to encourage child artistes and would serve as a forum that would offer the opportunity to appreciate artistic and creative works and so develop vital skills in children.

"Children acquire the ability to express themselves, negotiate differences and make responsible choices that would guarantee their survival in tomorrow's hostile world," he said.

Professor Amoaku said this year's KIDDAFEST promises to be the best of the best KIDDAFEST ceremonies.

Ms Joyce Aryee, Chairperson of the National Theatre Board, said KIDDAFEST was about enhancing education both formal and informal through the arts, enhancing social interactions among children and promoting understanding of the country's diverse cultural practices.

"KIDDAFEST should, therefore, be the clarion call for the restoration of our distinct cultural identity reflecting true values of chastity, patriotism, discipline, the dignity of labour and respect for all ages" she said.

Ms Aryee urged staff of the National Theatre and all parents to maintain strict supervision over the children, who would attend the programmes and give them avenues for wholesome education and entertainment.

Programmes featuring in this year's KIDDAFEST include, a dinner for street children in collaboration with the Street Academy, a drama to showcase the plight of child slaves, operation of an internet caf? at the exhibition site, where children would have the opportunity to learn more on Information Technology among other things.

A new jingle for KIDDAFEST designed by old and new musicians was also out doored as part of the launch.
