My music genre is Afro-fusion; not Afro-beats – Davido

Davido Davido

Davido clarified his style or genre of music as Afro Fusion as the 23-year-old artist refused to define his songs with the generally used ‘Afrobeat’ or ‘Afropop’.

While speaking with Ebro Darden of New York top radio station, Hot 97 on Apple Radio Beats 1, Davido said his hit song Gobe was more Calypso driven and further explained why.

Ebro queried the Nigerian singer, “Can you articulate the difference between Afro Pop and Afro Beat?”

“I wouldn’t call my music Afro Beat I will call mine Afro Fusion because it’s just too different.” Davido responded.

“You know the originator of Afro Beat of course is Fela Kuti. Fela has a sound which I can say has the heavy baseline, the Rhodes, brass instrument, and the percussion is different.”

“If you ask me, Gobe is Calypso, Afro mixed with Calypso.” He continued. “But I feel like the Afrobeats is jut more catchy and has caught the waves since time.”

“I can’t really tell you the difference between Afropop and Afrobeats.” The HKN boss concluded while adding, “Cos I know some songs that I won’t call Afrobeats; I would call [them] Afropop or Afrotrap.”

Davido is not just refining his genre of music, he is also giving back to society as he disclosed he will be giving four less privileged students full scholarships in 2016.

The students who will be selected on merit will be recipients of his foundation established on the legacy of his late-mum, Veronica Adeleke.

If you are a lover of music or music production, what do you think separates or differentiates Afrobeat, Afropop, and Afrofusion? And what genre do you think Davido falls into?
