The 2016 edition of the prestigious African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) will take place in Port Harcourt, Nigeria tomorrow, Saturday, June 11.

As usual, a lot of expectations await the event as regards who wins what.

Ghana is hoping to win some of the major categories after receiving a total of fifteen (15) nominations with five (5) films.

Among these categories are Best Actor in Leading Role, Best Actor in Supporting Role, Best Director and Best Young/Promising Actor category among others.

New actor Joseph Otsiman got the nod for Best Actor in Supporting Role for his performance in the drama thriller, The Cursed Ones, directed by Nana Obiri Yeboah. Nana has also been nominated for Best Director award while young actress, Ophelia Klenam Dzidzornu also got nominated for AMAA 2016 Award for Best Young/Promising Actor category for her role in The Cursed Ones.

English actor Oris Erhuero is set to slug it out with other contenders for the Best Actor in Leading Role award for his performance in the same Ghanaian movie—The Cursed Ones.

The movie had majority of the nominations for Ghana but missed out on Best Actress in Lead Role category. Ghana didn’t make it into that category at all.

Shirley Frimpong Manso’s directed Rebecca had two nominations in the categories, AMAA 2016 Award for Achievements in Editing and Sound.

Two other Ghanaian films—Cursed Treasure and Daggers of Life (Agbe Fe Akumehewo)—have both been nominated for Ousmane Sembene AMAA 2016 Award for Best Film in an African Language.

The Peculiar Life of a Spider, also from Ghana, made it into the Best Animation category.

Should Ghana win more of the categories, it will go to confirm that the country’s film industry is one of the thriving industries on the African continent.
