MUSIGA calls for Peace Songs for Election 2016

Obour, MUSIGA President Obour, MUSIGA President

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is inviting peace songs from its members from April 6 to 29 for consideration and inclusion in a peace album compilation of songs to herald the need for peaceful and credible elections in November 2016.

The call for entries follows the Union’s selection by Star Ghana as one of its partner organizations for a campaign for peaceful and credible elections.

MUSIGA is among thirty-five other civil society organizations selected by STAR-Ghana as implementing partners working for peaceful and credible elections.

According to the Union’s President BiceOseiKuffour aka Obour, this is in furtherance of the Union’s support for peaceful elections in Ghana, a cause the Union has been very committed to, playing a key role in calling for peaceful elections during the last general elections. He said the best three songs selected by the committee will win cash prizes and be up for the VGMA Development Song of the Year.

In all a total fifteen songs will appear on the compilation which will include an All Star song which will feature some of the leading musicians of our time.

The chairman of the song selection committee and 1st Vice President of the Union, Bessa Simons says the songs to be submitted should have a message on the need for peaceful and credible elections and should be well recorded.

The Union will hold a series of nationwide Peace Walks, fora and musical concerts from May to herald the need for violent free and credible elections under a program dubbed “Using Musical as A Tool for National Cohesion in Election 2016”.

These activities will be supported by social media activations led by some of the leading musicians in Ghana.

Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Responsiveness in Ghana (STAR-Ghana) is a voice and empowerment programme which supports civil society to strengthen accountability and responsiveness of the state to citizens’ issues.

STAR-Ghana has a vision to see an active and engaged civil society capable of articulating citizens’ demands and an effective state that is responsive and accountable to its citizens with a goal to develop a vibrant, well-informed and assertive civil society able to contribute to transformational national development and inclusive access to high quality, accountable public services for all Ghanaian citizens. The programme is funded by UK Aid, DANIDA and the EU.

A combined team of police and military was deployed to the area by the Ashanti Regional Security Council to flush out the herdsmen but the move is yet to yield any positive results as the nomads are still within the locality and surrounding communities destroying farms and tormenting farmers.

The onslaught of the Fulani affliction has led to the death of several locals and left many devastated following the destruction on their farmlands.

A notice served the inhabitants of the area announcing the demonstration urged them to take their destiny into their own hands and ward off the Fulani herdsmen.

An earlier directive gave up to the end of last month for them to vacate the community with their cattle but to no avail.

Below is the notice by Agogo Youth Association

Agogo Mman Kuo(Local Branch) and Agogo Youth Association in conjunction with Agogo Traditional Council and Agogo Local Council of Churches will embark on a peaceful demonstration on the continuous stay of the Fulani herdsmen on Agogo Stool lands.
