Confusion in actors' front over Ghana Movie Awards

It is has almost become a surety that the Ghana Movie Awards, spearheaded by Fred Nuamah and his Ghana Movie Foundation, cannot be organized without any shred of controversy since its inception in 2010.

After the 5th edition of the awards was organized last year, 30th December 2014 at the Accra International Center, there seem to be some confusion on the participation and appearance of sections of the actors’ fraternity at the event.

Many Kumasi-based actors who were nominated for various awards were noticeably absent at last year’s event and the President of the Ashanti Region branch of the Ghana Actors Guild, Bill Asamoah - has confirmed to the paper that; his office sent out directive to all of its members not to show up at the event.

The only person who was seen at the event and collected all the awards on behalf of the Kumasi-based actors was Kwaku Manu and the President explained that, Kwaku Manu has apologized; stating that he (Manu) was not in town when the directive was issued for them not to appear at the event.

However, in an interesting twist to the tale, actor Lil Win’s manager, Abdul Razak Amissah, has also told the paper that; no one can instruct them not to attend any awards scheme in Ghana.

“If we have been called to receive an award which is supposed to be a gift for our hard work, I don’t think any association or anyone can prevent us from going for it. It’s our personal decision as to whether to go or not but if the Actors Guild or FIPAG has any problem with the organization of the awards – they are supposed to channel it to the producers who sent the movies, not we the receivers of the awards,” he said.

On why Lil’ Win was not at the main event, he explained that; they had an equally important program to attend on the night of the movie awards, so, what they did was to communicate with the organizers on their will to attend both program, but the plan to attend both events failed.

“We even had our tickets booked and we spoke with the Founder of the awards, Fred Nuamah that we will attend the event but other things came in and we couldn’t attend,” he explained.

He added that they have since received the Ghana Movie Awards statuettes won on the night from the organizers and that they will use the opportunity to apologize to their fans for not attending the awards.

Lil win ‘s manager, Razak also cleared the air that they are not in any way disappointed in the organizers of the Ghana Movie Awards, contrary to the stance of the Actors’ Guild: rather, they are grateful and happy to have received such an award.

In a separate chat with Vivian Achor, who’s also the newly elected Vice President of the Ghana Actors’ Guild, she said that – she personally sees nothing wrong with Ghanaian actors attending the Ghana Movie Awards because, it is an industry award.

“I have not seen any document that states that our members or Ghanaian actors cannot attend the Ghana Movie Awards. What I know is that; the FIPAG are the ones who have a problem with the awards and that does not prevent us the members of Ghana Actors Guild from attending,” she revealed.
