Ghana Music Awards To Be Held Today

This year’s Ghana Music Awards (GMA) will be held today (Saturday). The awards seem to be enjoying much patronage than the previous editions. With the introduction of innovations including the opportunity for music fans to vote via the phone and newspapers, the general public has been caught in the euphoria leading to this year’s event.

Speculations are being made as to who wins what. There are more than 20 categories to be awarded at the event but there is a straight fight between Buk Bak, the hiplife duo and Kojo Antwi.

Buk Bak has seven nominations – Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, Hiplife Artiste of the Year, Hiplife Album of the Year and Hiplife Song of the Year.

Kojo Antwi follows with six nominations which are Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, Contemporary Highlife Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

The topmost Song of the Year award is being contested by Kontihene’s ''Akatasea;, Daddy Lumba’s ''Menya Mpo''; Tic Tac’s ''Minka Bio'' and Collins Amponsah’s ''Do something New''. The other two are Buk Bak’s ''Klu Blofo'' and Kojo Antwi’s ''Emmirika''.

It is widely expected however that the topmost Song of the year award will go to Kojo Antwi, but this is being contested by other sections of Ghanaians who believe Buk Bak will win.

The Artiste of the year is expected to go to Buk Bak because they appear to have dominated the music scene for the best part of last year with three of their songs – ''Kluu Blofo, Kakatsofa and You For Know''.

The winner of the GMA’s topmost award - Song of the Year, will be invited to perform at the prestigious KORA All Africa Music Awards. The Executive Producer of KORA, Ernest Coovi Adjovi has arrived in Ghana to attend this evening’s awards ceremony. He was invited by the Organisers of GMA, Charter House Promotions. Music enthusiasts have expressed their satisfaction about the total organization of this year’s event.
