2013 Ghana Movie Awards: How not to organize a show

The Accra International Conference Center, the usual venue for the well talked about Ghana Movie Awards for four consecutive years, has played host to the gathering of crème de la crème in Ghana entertainment industry.

The GHANA MOVIE AWARDS has -no doubt- grown to become a glittering concept, and because it’s portray Ghana entertainment in a good light, many has therefore come to respect it, in and outside Ghana.

Though Ghana movie awards has come and gone, there are still flaws that it left in it audience heart issues such as ‘African time’.

This year the show had another turn of beautiful faces; it featured arch-rivals in the movie industry come face-to-face.

Hogan, the comedian did a great job by cracking ribs with his authentic jokes.

The MCs on the night didn’t get it all though there were lapses but it can get better, hopefully next year.

The stage was beautifully designed to suit the night. Lighting was on point.

In 2012, the show started at exactly 11:00pm, fast forward to 2013, the show started at exactly 11:35pm. This year’s blame was channeled at the rain, but discipline was thrown to the wind, a development which caused guests who tried to make the slated time had to wait outside for those putting finishing touches inside the main auditorium to finish. The sad news is: some of the attendees had to leave to retire to their various beds.

The entire organization according to what we gathered was upon the shoulder of just one man: eye witness says it was same man at the gate monitoring proceeds at the same time was at the backstage rotating three award plaques that he brought to dummy the entire public. Report has it that not even one of the winners went home with their awards.

The fact will linger that about two-thirds of everyone that was seated in that auditorium last night, had an issue with the organization but some will deny it though it was clear that the organizers deceived the public when they told us that the South African music group-Mafikhozolo, were going to perform at the events.

In general, the night saw so many dramatic happenings such as Joselyn Dumas almost flipping out her breast at the mention of her name as a proud winner in the category which Leila Djansi had vividly chastised the organizers for wrongfully doing so. But in all, JD as she is fondly called cautioned her director and literally asked her to allow sleeping dogs rest in peace.

The melodrama of reconciliation that occurred between Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong-Manso during their awards receiving showed that the two ladies have grown up and burnt their hatches.

Nadia Buari and Jackie Appiah also publicly sent a message that they are two good pals once again, even if it was going to last for that night. It was simple, the message in those gesture showed that everything about every that everyone is unique.

Onto the nominees: the nominations and the categories which had already sparked commentaries from movie enthusiasts, it was time to see who will carry the ultimate prize, and this year was another great feat for Leila Djansi’s “Northern Affair”, a movie she had stylishly made Mabel Germain the Producer because of her comments few months back about not doing movies in Ghana and for the Ghanaian public again.

Obviously, this paid off for her even beyond her imagination as she carted more awards away at the event due to her international standard movie.

Congratulations to John Dumelo and Jackie Appiah for showing their true maturity on the various movies they picked accolades for. Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Funny Face, Esi of Chorkor Trotro, Mabel Germain, Herty Owusu, Jon Germain, Kofi Akyeame, Shaun Burdick, Francis Odega, Patience Ozorkwor, Prince David Osei, Kwadwo Nkansah (Lilwin), Jude Odeh, and D.J Vegas, also picked up various awards for their efforts.
