During a high-profile concert performance, American rapper A Boogie wit Da Hoodie paused his set to pay an emotional tribute to Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager who was tragically killed in the Bronx.
In a video making waves on social media, the Bronx-born artiste, addressing the crowd as a photograph of the young boy flashed across the big screen, highlighted the heartbreak of Javits' untimely passing.
"He just came here from Africa to America about a year ago, and he passed away due to a gunshot wound. So let's give a moment of silence to him," A Boogie told the audience before observing a moment of silence and transitioning into his music.
Javits Frimpong’s death has sparked widespread outrage and grief both in New York and Ghana. Exactly one year after moving from Ghana to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, the 15-year-old was shot in the abdomen while walking to DreamYard Preparatory School in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx.
He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the tragedy, Javits’ father revealed that his son had recently faced bullying at school, noting that the school principal had suspended two students just days prior following a confrontation where Javits was defending himself.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has launched a manhunt for three teenage suspects connected to the shooting. Community leaders, activists, and Ghanaian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa—have strongly condemned the violence and demanded swift justice.
