Ghanaian musician Praye Tietia has attributed the breakup of music groups to ego, arguing that the desire for individual recognition often creates tension among members as they gain fame.
Speaking during a TikTok live session with comedian and musician Ajeezay, Praye Tietia said the popular perception that money and women are the primary causes of group breakups was inaccurate, based on his experience.
According to him, problems often arise when one member begins to feel superior to the others or believes they contribute more to the group's success.
“I can say group breakups, from my experience, are caused by ego. It’s not money or women that normally break groups. It’s just a perception out there, but it’s not correct. When you start getting fame, it will get to a point where one will feel like he’s the favorite one among the group, or maybe he’s the one who sings the most choruses or something like that. It’s all ego,” he said.
Praye Tietia explained that when group members share their earnings fairly, money should not necessarily become a source of conflict.
However, he noted that differences in social circles and the influence of friends can also contribute to disagreements.
He said the people he associated with during his time in the group were different from the friends of his colleague Eugene, suggesting that members' individual relationships and conversations could influence how they perceived their positions within the group.

“If it’s money, we all share the money equally, so money can’t cause any confusion. The set of friends I made when we were a group are totally different from Eugene’s friends. The set of friends you will have and the kind of conversations you will have with them, putting in your head that you’re the best among them, if you don’t think well, that will also bring issues,” he shared.
Despite the challenges associated with group dynamics, Praye Tietia described working in a group as a rewarding experience and encouraged aspiring musicians not to abandon the idea because some existing groups had fallen apart.
He advised people planning to form music groups to establish clear expectations from the beginning, respect one another and remain focused on their shared goals.
“Group is a very beautiful thing to do and as it’s always said, two heads are always better than one. If you can form a group with a friend or someone you think you have something in common with and you can come up with something good together, it’s a beautiful thing,” he stated.
He continued, “Don’t let the groups who have fallen out discourage you if you think you can team up with someone. Right from the beginning, outline everything and note that you’re all working towards a common goal. Make a good song, put it out there and make sure it lasts. Just respect each other and don’t listen to outsiders and you will be fine.”
Reflecting on his own experience, the musician said the members of Praye had learnt from their past mistakes and were now back together.
He also hinted at plans for the trio to perform together on one stage in the near future.
“We’ve all learnt from the mistakes we’ve made. As we’ve left, now we’re back together again and very soon, you will see all three of us perform on one stage,” he added.
