Asakaa group member Skyface has revealed that he stopped wearing his signature mask in 2024 after fraudsters began impersonating him to scam event promoters and create complications for him during international travel.
Speaking in an interview with Delay, Skyface explained that contrary to public perception, he did not initially wear the mask as a branding strategy but to conceal his identity from his family while pursuing music.
“The mask was from way back, when I started to trap. I wasn’t shy; I was hiding. I didn’t have the confidence, and when school came in, I needed to hide more because my big brothers are difficult,” he said.
According to the rapper, his brothers were unaware that he was the person behind the mask, with only his mother and younger brother knowing about his music career.
“I didn’t want my brothers to know I was doing music, so they didn’t know I was the one behind the mask. The only people who knew were my mother and my little brother,” he disclosed.

Although the mask eventually became part of his identity as an artiste, Skyface said he was forced to abandon it because it made it easier for impersonators to exploit his image.
“I didn’t think I was going to take it off because it became a part of my brand that I wanted to keep, but people don’t understand a lot of things in our locality and the fraud was too much,” he explained.
He recounted how people posing as him collected money from promoters and organisers under the pretext of booking performances, leading to complaints and even police involvement.
“People were impersonating me and taking money from promoters and organisers with promises of performing at their events. They’d call us to demand their money. The police were calling us about arresting people who were also impersonating me,” he stated.
Skyface added that wearing the mask also created challenges during visa applications, as embassy officials repeatedly questioned whether he was the same person shown in official documents.
“Even at embassies I faced the same problems. Everyone gets their approvals fast, but when it’s my turn, they ask questions after questions: ‘Are you sure that is you?’ Then they look at their machine and look at my face to confirm,” he said.
