Popular media personality and disc jockey DJ Slim has defended Serwaa Amihere against backlash for asking Ghanaians to stop rocking fake designer items.

Speaking on Class FM, DJ Slim argued that many people criticised Serwaa because of economic hardship, not because her point was wrong.

According to him, if the same comments had been made in wealthier communities, they would have been applauded instead of attracting outrage.

He noted that some people had even suggested that Serwaa should have encouraged consumers to buy bags from Kantamanto Market instead. However, he maintained that such arguments overlooked the real issue.

“System hard and Serwaa has lost touch with reality; that’s why her statement was off because then she would know that even the Aldo bags at GH¢800 and GH¢700, some of the bags at Kantamanto are better than them, so you will not even direct people to buy from Kanta.

"Most Ghanaians are speaking out of poverty; she would not be dragged in Movado for saying this. In fact, they would clap for her. We don’t have some, so we’re angry. We wake up angry,” he said.

DJ Slim further stressed that Serwaa was right to encourage people to patronise original products because designers invest significant time and effort into creating them, only for others to produce counterfeit versions that undermine their businesses.

“Even as an artist, would you want your art to be pirated? She’s not wrong. She was never wrong to tell you to buy original because someone spent day and night designing that kind of bag for you, and after he’s done creating it, somebody in one corner would also create his own different one, selling a fake version of the thing he created. You’re killing somebody’s business.

"You’re not even thinking about the person whose business you’re killing because you’re complaining that you want to survive for your own selfish interest. You see how we are as human beings, so Serwaa is not wrong, but it is dicey,” he added.
