Ghanaian rapper Pope Skinny has criticised the state of Ghana’s music industry, claiming that some musicians portray a lifestyle they cannot genuinely afford to maintain.
Speaking in a recent interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu, the rapper described the industry as one where artistes pretend to be successful financially, even when their earnings do not reflect the image they project.
According to Pope Skinny, some musicians who appear wealthy and successful are allegedly involved in activities outside legitimate music-related income to sustain their lifestyles.
“Ghana music is ‘fake it till you make it’ and that’s what they’re doing. Musicians who look good are doing some things that are not legit and it’s a shame,” he said.
He further expressed concern about the financial struggles of musicians, questioning why artistes could score hit songs and still struggle to make ends meet.
“It’s sad that you will have a hit and still be begging. They’re not all making things through the industry,” he shared.

Pope Skinny also called for a leadership that would listen to the concerns of musicians and help create better opportunities for them to earn sustainable incomes from their craft.
He argued that artistes should be able to benefit financially from their music rather than depend on other sources of income to survive.
“We need a leader who can descend and hear us out so that we can also get something small from the music we do,” he stated.
The rapper also criticised what he described as a culture of borrowed luxury, where some musicians allegedly use items belonging to other people but present them publicly as their own possessions.
“You will be listing things you don’t have as you own them because that’s what they’re doing out there. Someone would borrow you something, but you will be claiming ownership of it, which is not going well for us,” he added.
