Ghanaian actor Don Little has opened up about his difficult childhood, revealing how his father's drinking and gambling habits deprived the family of basic necessities and how he was severely beaten after allegedly exposing his father's theft of building materials.
Speaking to media personality Nana Romeo, Don Little said his family lived in poverty, making it difficult to meet their basic needs.
However, he said his father's spending habits worsened their situation because he spent most of his money on alcohol and lotto instead of supporting the household.
The actor further alleged that his father frequently assaulted his mother whenever she complained about his behaviour.
“The person who was not helpful was my father. Whenever he went to work and got any little money, only two things would happen: either he would buy alcohol to drink or stake lotto. That was all he used his money for. He did not even give ‘chop money’ in the house. Whenever my mother complained about his habit, he would beat her in our presence,” Don Little shared.

Beyond the financial difficulties and domestic violence he said his family experienced, Don Little also recounted an incident involving his father's alleged theft of building materials at a property where they lived.
The actor explained that during his childhood, his family lived in a wooden structure at Odorkor in Accra, where they served as caretakers for someone who was building a house.
Their responsibility was to look after the property and protect the building materials stored there, including cement and iron rods.
However, Don Little claimed that his father would secretly leave their room at night and take some of the materials they were supposed to guard.
He said he began monitoring his father's movements through openings in their wooden structure and eventually discovered what was happening.
“At midnight, my father would sneak out of the room, and I would secretly monitor him through our wooden structure. He would go to a place that someone had entrusted to us to take care of, where building materials such as cement and iron rods were kept. Before I realised what was happening, he would bring a wheelbarrow, load bags of cement into it and go and sell them,” he disclosed.
Don Little further revealed that he eventually reported his father's activities to the foreman supervising the construction of the property.
However, he disclosed that his decision to report his father came at a cost, as his father allegedly beat him mercilessly after learning that he had exposed him.
