Ghanaian gospel musician Celestine Donkor has spoken out on the ongoing marital saga involving fashionista Nana Akua Addo, urging women in abusive relationships to prioritise their safety and leave before it is too late.

Reacting to the public discussions surrounding Nana Akua Addo’s alleged ordeal, Celestine said she was deeply disturbed, especially as a mother of three daughters, adding that the situation reflects the reality many women silently endure in abusive marriages.

“I am scared, I am very scared because I have three daughters,” she said, describing Nana Akua as a talented, educated and globally admired woman whose status should not shield her from empathy.

“A woman who sits down and dreams of her outlook… when she gets out, cameras hold still for her. International bloggers, media, everybody freezes to catch a glimpse of her. Such a talent… A woman with a stature like that is being abused to this extent by a man. I am worried. I am concerned,” she stated.

According to Celestine, the overwhelming support shown to Nana Akua on social media proves she represents countless women trapped in abusive marriages.

She argued that society’s glorification of marriage often pressures women to remain in dangerous relationships for fear of shame, criticism or being labelled failures.

She questioned why divorced women are made to feel they have failed while victims of abuse are encouraged to endure suffering in the name of marriage.

“We make divorce appear like you have failed. We make divorce appear like you will go to hell. Meanwhile, the hell in the reality of your life is worse than the hell we are afraid of,” she said.

The gospel singer also criticised families and religious beliefs that encourage women to remain in abusive unions, insisting there is no reward for enduring violence.

“Why should a woman endure abuse? Endure for what? Endure for what crown? Endure for what reward in heaven? The Bible never says there is a crown waiting for women who endure abusive marriages,” she stressed.

Calling on women to put their lives first, Celestine urged victims of domestic abuse not to allow fear of public opinion to keep them in harmful relationships.

“If you’re a woman and you’re enduring this type of abuse in your marriage… save yourself. Save yourself. Save yourself because if it’s a threat to your life, it is dangerous for you,” she said.

She concluded by encouraging women living in fear to leave abusive homes, stressing that no marriage is worth losing one’s life over.

“If a marriage is not giving you joy but makes you afraid every day, my dear, my sister, get out. Get out,” she added
