Actress Christiana Awuni has identified that the Ghanaian side of TikTok has become a breeding ground for insults, disrespect, and abusive behaviour, particularly among the youth.

She raised these concerns while stating that she wished the social media platform would be banned in Ghana.

“It really bothers me. It hurts my soul as a woman. Social media didn’t come to help Ghanaians. If I had the chance, I would tell the government to ban TikTok and the others because they didn’t come to help us,” she said.

Awuni acknowledged that social media can be beneficial when used for legitimate purposes such as earning a living but lamented that many users have instead turned it into a platform for abuse.

“If you’re using it to make your money, that is fine, but if you’re using it to insult others, it is bad. Sadly, those insulting people are more than those using it to make money,” she stated.

Questioning the behaviour of some young people online, the actress said she was saddened by the level of disrespect shown towards elders.

“Why would a child sit on social media and disrespect an elder? The youth these days have already dug their grave; they just need someone to push them in. When you dig your grave, we will push you into it,” she said.

She further referenced the Bible, stressing that respect should extend beyond one’s parents to all older people.

“The Bible says to obey your father and mother so that your days may be long on earth, but that doesn’t single out only your parents. You can’t just insult and disrespect anyone who is older than you. They haven’t done anything to you. I can’t even repeat some of the words they use,” Awuni added.
