Musician Sista Afia has called on her fellow artistes to pay attention to the cleanliness of microphones used during live performances, urging them to disinfect shared equipment before putting it to use.

The singer made the appeal in a social media post on August 28, 2026, where she raised concerns about the number of performers who use the same microphone at events.

“I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this. PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT! We go from show to show sharing microphones with God knows how many people,” she wrote.

Sista Afia explained that musicians frequently move from one event to another and may use microphones that have already been handled by several other performers who sing, speak or breathe directly into them.

She linked the practice to potential exposure to germs, particularly when artistes make direct contact with the microphone.

“Then after shows, some of us come home feeling sick. I honestly think artists should start carrying a small microphone safe disinfectant/sanitizing spray or wipes in their bags and clean the mic before performing,” she said.

As a precautionary measure, the musician advised artistes to keep microphone-safe disinfectant sprays or sanitising wipes handy so they can clean shared microphones before using them.

She further suggested that performers who have the means could invest in their own mini microphones, reducing their reliance on equipment shared among multiple artistes.

Sista Afia ended her message by encouraging her colleagues to make personal health a priority and adopt better hygiene practices when performing.

“My fellow colleagues, please let’s start taking this seriously. Your health first. Disinfect your mic before you perform,” she wrote.
