'Ghanaian guys are not stingy; they just like to calculate spendings' - Stonebwoy

Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy has defended Ghanaian men against claims that they are stingy. He has argued that their reluctance to spend is often a result of careful calculation rather than unwillingness to spend.

Stonebwoy made the comments during a recent interview after the host listed “egg, big bum and stingy” among the things that come to mind when discussing Ghanaians.

While addressing the “stingy” label tagged with Ghanaian men, Stonebwoy said they are simply “good at maths” and tend to calculate their spending based on their circumstances.

“On the stingy part, oh my days. You know? The Ghanaian boys are good at maths,” he said.
He added, “So maybe when they’re calculating the amount, you know, against how, you know, it gets to them, but the promise is big.”

Stonebwoy, however, advised Ghanaian men to be honest with women about their financial situation rather than making promises they cannot fulfil.

He said honesty could earn them greater respect and prevent situations where they feel pressured to spend beyond their means.

“You see, this is what I tell my Ghana boys: be honest. Be honest, you don’t know who you’re dealing with. Because women love honesty,” Stonebwoy said.

He used the example of a man promising a woman a boat ride without having the money to pay for it, saying such behaviour could negatively affect other Ghanaian men.

“Now, for the fact that you took this beautiful Madam Joyce on a boat, on an Uber boat, and gave her a promise that didn’t match the boat, you have spoiled the market for us,” he said.

Stonebwoy stressed that when a man makes a promise to someone he considers special, he should be prepared to follow through.

“When you say, ‘Oh, I’ll take you on a boat,’ you make sure you book the boat. You make sure you put your last money onto it because she’s special to you, you treat her specially,” he added.

The musician also compared Ghanaian and Nigerian men when discussing how much they are willing to spend on women.

According to him, Nigerian men are more willing to “go out of their way” for women, even if they later regret how much they spent.

“The Nigerian boys too, they have heart. Let me tell you, Nigerians, they get liver,” Stonebwoy said, explaining that the expression meant Nigerian men could be more daring and willing to take financial risks.

He acknowledged that spending money on someone one loves is ultimately a personal choice, arguing that people should be willing to do what makes their hearts happy.

“So it’s a choice if you want to spend all your money and go broke on that person that you love. I bet you it’s a good thing. Because you must do something that your heart pleases,” he said.
