Fashion entrepreneur Richard Brown, popularly known as Osebo, has criticised the standard of fashion displayed on Ghana’s major red carpets, insisting that appearances should be determined by the quality of an outfit rather than a person’s celebrity status.

Speaking in an interview with Elsie Lamar on GhanaWeb’s Talkertainment, Osebo argued that red carpets are meant to showcase exceptional fashion and should only feature individuals whose outfits meet that standard.

“We don’t go to the red carpet with names but with outfits. If we should go to the red carpet with names, why don’t we just mention names for them to come on the red carpet?” he questioned.

His comments come amid renewed public criticism of this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) red carpet, with many social media users expressing disappointment over what they described as poor fashion choices by some attendees.

According to Osebo, organisers should prioritise style over celebrity influence when deciding who walks the red carpet.

“I’m a celebrity. My outfit is not nice. It doesn’t fit the red carpet. Why will you allow me to be on the red carpet just because of my name?” he asked.

He maintained that anyone, celebrity or otherwise, deserves a place on the red carpet if their outfit is worthy of the occasion.

“Red carpets are supposed to be wow. The outfit. Not just any outfit,” he stressed.

Osebo also questioned whether those responsible for selecting red carpet guests possess the fashion expertise needed to make such decisions.

“You need to consult people that really understand fashion and dressing. You don’t just do it because you feel like you want to do it,” he said.

Drawing comparisons with Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Osebo praised the quality of outfits displayed on Nigerian red carpets, noting that fashion there is taken more seriously and often attracts commercial opportunities for celebrities.

He further urged organisers to maintain strict dress standards, insisting that casual outfits such as shorts, jeans and slippers have no place on a red carpet.

“Allow people to come on the red carpet with their outfits. Allow the public to judge. But not slippers, not jeans… Shorts,” he added.
