Ghanaian highlife musician Akwaboah has shed light on his widely discussed post advising men to save GH¢8,000 monthly before marriage.

In a post on X on July 17, 2026, Akwaboah shared a 2024 church ministration video by Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, in which the clergyman laid out the financial and psychological realities couples face in marriage.

"Marriage is not just about love. You will be saying 'I love you, I love you.' When you get married and she gets pregnant and you the man has to foot the bills for hospital visits, then you will realise you're married," Apostle Nyamekye said in the video.

He added that a lack of mental readiness is what causes early cracks in many marriages.

“It is also about your mindset, if the both of you do not have a mindset ready for marriage. That is when you begin to see cracks early in their marriage. That is when the man is afraid to come home after work because the wife is always nagging.

“It is not just love, the couple has to work together to raise the children, support eachother and have a successful marriage and family,” the clergyman added.

Akwaboah appeared to be drawing a connection between the clergyman's counsel on marital preparedness and his own GH¢8,000 monthly savings advice.

However, many users were quick to point out that the two messages were not quite saying the same thing.

"The man is talking about sense and character bro," one user wrote plainly, with another stating: "The pastor dey talk say ebi sense, you are also saying work before marriage. The woman for also support. If your wife is not supporting you then she's killing you slowly."

Several users also raised eyebrows at the timing of Akwaboah's marriage counsel, with one pointedly asking "3 days pɛ wey you marry and you start dey give advice no?" a reference to the musician's own recent marriage.

Another simply wrote "Just be vocal... what paa you dey go through???" suggesting the post may have been personal.

Some users argued that financial stability and mindset were inseparable, with one writing "As a man you need to get a good and permanent source of income before you say I do," while another defended Akwaboah saying "He didn't specifically talk about just money, he was talking about wisdom which involves everything."

Akwaboah's original post, in which he advised men to begin saving GH¢8,000 monthly well ahead of marriage, had ignited widespread discussion about the financial burden of marriage in Ghana and whether such advice was realistic for the average Ghanaian man.
