Nigerian entrepreneur and media personality Bunmi George, popularly known as JBums, has opened up about how she and her husband navigated one of the most challenging periods in their marriage after he lost his job as a pilot for nearly a year.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Dear Ife Series podcast, JBums revealed that her husband was unemployed for 11 months and had to make difficult financial decisions to help the family stay afloat.

According to Bunmi, her husband, who is passionate about flying, called for a family meeting shortly after losing his job and proposed drastic measures to reduce their household expenses.

"My husband was out of a job for 11 months. Anyone who is married to a pilot would know that a pilot is in love with his job. He loved being in the air," she said.

She explained that her husband suggested selling one of their two cars and reducing the number of domestic staff from four to two despite her initial reluctance.

"One time, he had a meeting with me and said we have to cut down our expenses. We had two cars, so one car needed to go. I thought about it, and I was like no, we can't go back to sharing a car. I didn't want a situation where he would be using the car, and I would also want to go out.

"We had about four domestic staff, and he asked me to choose just two among them so that the other two would go. I like comfort, so laying them off was so difficult for me. I told him I'm still making money, but he said no, there's only one income, so everything must be cut down," she recounted.

JBums said her husband did not only suggest cost-cutting measures but also led by example, by taking on more household responsibilities.

"He had to then take up a lot of responsibilities around the house, and he was willing to do it. He just didn't say what we're going to do. He led by example and he showed me how we were going to do it,” she stated.

She further disclosed that he later joined her company as an employee, where he earned a salary and even handled deliveries when necessary.

"One thing that baffled people's brains is that he actually came to work in my company. He used to come to the office, and he was earning a salary. Sometimes, he would have to go and do deliveries. I felt like that was humility," she shared.

Despite becoming the family's primary breadwinner during that period, JBums noted that she was intentional about maintaining the respect she had always accorded her husband.

According to her, leadership in marriage is not determined by income, adding that the difficult season ultimately strengthened their relationship.

"I had to be extra careful, not because he had an issue with working with me, but I wanted to make sure that I still honoured him in that time. I believe that my husband is a leader and leadership is not about how much money you make. I still gave him that respect and, in those times, I was very careful with what I would do and say. We went through that and it drew us even closer," she added.
