Showboy slams ATU's SRC over alleged free performance request

Showboy says ATU shouldn't expect him to perform for free at SRC Artiste Night Showboy says ATU shouldn't expect him to perform for free at SRC Artiste Night

Ghanaian musician Showboy has criticised Accra Technical University (ATU) after alleging that the institution invited him to perform at its 2026 SRC Artiste Night without offering him any payment.

Speaking during a TikTok Live session, the outspoken musician questioned why a large tertiary institution would expect him to perform for free, suggesting that such an arrangement failed to recognise the value of his work as an artiste.

Showboy wondered whether the organisers of the event disliked him enough to make such a request.

He also argued that with the school’s large student population, it should be possible for students to contribute towards paying for his performance instead of expecting him to appear at the event without compensation.

“Accra Technical University, you guys want me to come and perform for free? Why? Do you hate me that much? A big school like yours, are there only poor people there? Can’t you go around and let the boys contribute GH¢100 each? With all those many students, let them contribute, and I’ll come perform for you,” Showboy stated.

Showboy further claimed that several of his colleagues perform at numerous tertiary events but receive only modest payments in return. In his view, the amount many artistes are paid does not reflect the time, effort and resources invested in preparing for live performances.

He stressed that he would not accept such arrangements, insisting that he would rather remain at home than perform at an event where he believes his work is not properly valued or compensated.
