Entertainment critic Bullgod has defended the decision to start Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi ahead of Benjamin Asare in Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments come after sections of Ghanaians questioned why Benjamin Asare was left on the bench despite his performances earlier in the tournament.

Speaking on the 'Street Is Watching' show, Bullgod argued that Ati-Zigi remains Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper because of his seniority and experience in the national team.

According to him, Benjamin Asare serves as the backup goalkeeper and is only expected to step in when Ati-Zigi is unavailable.

“Two of them, who is the senior player? Since the beginning of the tournament, it has been Ati Zigi. So they just have to know that this guy (Benjamin Asare) is just a spare keeper. When Ati Zigi is unavailable, that is when he (Benjamin) comes in,” Bullgod said.

Bullgod also praised Ati-Zigi’s display against Colombia, insisting the goalkeeper produced an impressive performance despite Ghana’s elimination from the competition.

He further noted that before the match, he had predicted on social media that Ghana would be knocked out of the tournament, a post that attracted heavy criticism from football fans.

Following the Black Stars’ exit, Bullgod questioned whether those who insulted him online would now apologise for doubting his prediction.

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end after a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia in Kansas City.

Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, finishing powerfully after Luis Suárez delivered a cross from the right. The victory secured Colombia the final place in the Round of 16, where they faced Switzerland.

Although Colombia dominated large spells of the contest, Ati-Zigi kept Ghana in the game with a string of outstanding saves. He denied a curling effort from Kevin Puerta in the 55th minute, while a minute later, a header from Luis Díaz was ruled out for offside.

Ati-Zigi was called into action again in the 58th minute, producing another excellent save to stop Díaz when the winger broke through on goal.

The Ghanaian shot-stopper also made crucial saves to deny Davinson Sánchez and Juan Fernando Quintero as Colombia searched for a second goal.

Despite Ati-Zigi’s heroics, Ghana failed to create enough chances to find an equaliser, bringing an end to a World Cup campaign that had shown promise after the Black Stars progressed from Group L under coach Carlos Queiroz.
