Former controversial socialite Rosemond Brown, popularly known as Akuapem Poloo, has opened up about her conversion to Islam, revealing that her time in prison played a significant role in the life-changing decision.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu on UTV, the actress and social media personality said prison officers who counselled her after her release advised her to stay calm, focus on rebuilding her life and even consider settling down in marriage.

"That was after I had gone to prison. A lot of prison officers talked to me. They advised me that I was already a calm and collected person, so I should just behave myself, be cool and even get married," she said.

Following that experience, Akuapem Poloo said she resolved to put the past behind her and concentrate on building a better future for herself and her children.

On her conversion, she was emphatic that the decision was entirely her own, pushing back against widespread rumours that a wealthy Muslim man had influenced her decision.

"People thought I was converting because of a man. There were rumours that there was a certain Alhaji who had sponsored my trip to Mecca. No, it was my own decision," she said.

In a remarkable revelation, she disclosed that the King of Saudi Arabia personally sponsored her Hajj trip.

"He contacted the embassy in Ghana. There was a letter signed by him saying I had been selected to go on an all-expenses-paid Hajj trip," she said.

She acknowledged that her family initially struggled to accept the conversion, fearing she was abandoning her faith.

"My folks didn't really like that I had decided to convert. They thought I was leaving to worship another God. But it isn't the case. We are all worshipping the same God, just through different paths," she said.

Akuapem Poloo described the Muslim community's reception as overwhelmingly warm, with members providing for her and her child.

"They provided clothes for me and my children. They gave me meat during Salah. People would call me and offer to pay my child’s school fees," she said.
