After nearly a decade in South Africa in search of better opportunities, a Ghanaian hairstylist has returned home with painful memories, renewed determination, and dreams of working with some of Ghana’s biggest music stars.
Speaking after arriving in Accra as part of the latest batch of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions, the young man said the experience has changed his outlook on travelling within the African continent.
“I'm done with travelling in Africa. But I will travel again to Europe. I've been away for almost 10 years,” he said.
Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his return, he remains hopeful about rebuilding his life in Ghana and pursuing his passion in the beauty and entertainment industry.
“My dream now is to style Ghanaian musicians and artistes such as Stonebwoy,” he added.
The hairstylist was among several Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa following renewed fears over attacks targeting foreign nationals. Some returnees shared emotional accounts of uncertainty, fear, and the struggles they endured before making the journey back home.
At the Accra International Airport, scenes of relief and exhaustion greeted the evacuees as government officials and security personnel received them.
For the returning hairstylist, however, the focus is now on starting afresh and turning his talent into a successful career in Ghana’s entertainment space.
