'Minister of lies' - Sister Derby fires Sam George over homosexuality-mental illness claim

Ghanaian singer Deborah Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Derby, has launched an attack on Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George over his characterisation of homosexuality as a mental illness.

She questioned the logic of criminalising people for a condition he himself frames as a health issue.

Taking to X on June 5, the outspoken entertainer challenged the minister directly, asking why a government would push legislation to jail people it describes as mentally ill rather than seek treatment for them.

"If homosexuality is caused by mental illness according to Salmonella Georgina, why is he pushing a bill to criminalise 'mentally ill' people? Is it their fault that they're mentally ill?" she wrote, also dismissing the minister as the "Minister of LIES, MISINFORMATION and MANIPULATION," she posted.

Sister Derby also took aim at what she described as the foreign origins of the anti-LGBTQ+ push, suggesting that Ghanaian leaders backing the bill were acting as instruments of Western Christian evangelical influence rather than defenders of authentic African values.

"Such leaders like being slaves and/or puppets of white colonial masters because why is this clearly the second coming in the form of white Christian evangelicals collaborating with them and telling us how to live as Africans!" she added.

The musician's comments join those of many in the pro-LGBT community against the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, aka the anti-gay bill, which was passed by Parliament on May 29, 2026.
