Ghanaian filmmaker Peter Sedufia has lamented what he describes as ‘unfair comparisons’ between Ghana and Nigeria's film industries.
According to him, such debates ignore the differences in scale, population, and output between the two countries.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeekend on May 20, 2026, Sedufia acknowledged that the conversation is unavoidable but said the numbers being thrown around lack the context needed for a fair assessment.
"I think Ghanaians are making films, but how much of it? What is the scale of films we are making per year? What is the scale of films Nigerians are churning out per year?" he questioned.
He acknowledged that Nigeria produces significantly more films than Ghana annually, but argued that population size must be factored in before any proper comparison can be made.
"If you compare those, you will realise that Nigerians are churning out more films than Ghanaians. But sometimes we are unjustly compared to them.
"If you think Nigerians are making 60 films per year and Ghanaians are also supposed to be making 60 films per year, then that is a very wrong comparison," he said bluntly.

The filmmaker called on Ghanaians to recognise the strides the local industry has made rather than making such unnecessary comparisons.
"We shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. We are doing our best. It can always be better, it can get better, but let's appreciate the little progress we make as we try to improve upon them," he said.
Meanwhile, the National Film Authority has launched its long-awaited GH¢20 million Film Development Fund, an initiative aimed at tackling financing difficulties and fostering long-term growth within Ghana’s film sector.
