‘My song writing skills have not been recognized’ - Kuami Eugene

Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter Kuami Eugene has opened up about his disappointment over never winning the ‘Songwriter of the Year’ award at the TGMAs despite writing several hit songs throughout his career.

Speaking in an interview with Anita Akuffo, the “Angela” hitmaker said he believes his songwriting abilities have not received the recognition they deserve.

“Trust me am hurt, that is something that hurts me so much. My songwriting abilities that they don’t seem to recognize. They enjoy the songs, but they don’t give me the award for it. I’ve had the nomination before, but I’ve never received the award,” she said

Kuami Eugene argued that the TGMA often favors “quiet” or less mainstream songs in the Songwriter of the Year category instead of commercially successful hit songs.

He suggested that the scheme may see hit songs as temporary or fleeting, which is why they are often overlooked in that category.

“It is also because most of the songs I write are hit songs. I’ve never seen TGMA give Songwriter of the Year to a big song; they normally give it to that obscure song that’s in its corner. But I would rather write a hit song, and they see big bangers as fleeting music,” he added.

The singer clarified that he does not blame Ghanaians for his lack of recognition in the category, insisting that the decision lies entirely with the TGMA board and organizers, who determine which songs qualify for each category.

“I don’t think it’s the public, it’s TGMA because TGMA decides what gets into the category, and they don’t put it in there, so it’s them,” he cleared

He mentioned songs such as “Victory,” which he wrote for Joyce Blessing, as well as “Watch Me,” as examples of songs he believes were worthy of winning Songwriter of the Year.

Kuami Eugene added humorously that perhaps he may have to start making “quiet songs” instead of instant hit records if he wants to finally win the award someday.
