Celebrated Ghanaian actress and television host Nana Ama McBrown has stated that organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) should pay her if they want her to grace their red carpet.
Speaking during a discussion on Onua Show Time, McBrown explained that it is costly to prepare for a red carpet appearance, especially for celebrities who are not nominated or do not have songs in contention at the awards.
According to her, it does not make sense to simply send an invitation card and expect public figures to spend their own money to attend.
“TGMA can’t invite me to a red carpet while I don’t have a song. They’re aware it’s expensive to show up,” she said.
McBrown recalled that in previous years, organisers made the red carpet more attractive by providing fabric to guests to design outfits for the event.
She noted that she once used the fabric provided, attended the event, and won the Best Dressed prize, which came with a cash reward in dollars.
“I remember some time ago, they used to add cloth to their invitation. I even sewed the cloth and was crowned best dressed on the red carpet. There was a cash prize on it, so I won the dollars,” she recounted.
I will travel the world and enjoy life when I hit 50 – McBrown
The actress said the initiative made the red carpet highly competitive, as celebrities were motivated to put extra effort into their fashion choices.
“That made the red carpet very competitive and nice because you wouldn’t just go there; you had to show up all glamorous,” she shared.
McBrown stressed that she was speaking from the perspective of personalities who are neither nominees nor performers, but attend solely to support the event and entertain audiences.
She said such guests could easily choose to stay home, which is why organisers should offer some form of compensation.
“I’m talking from those who don’t have songs and those who won’t get any nominations’ point of view. We just show up for the entertainment and all the same, we can decide to entertain ourselves in our homes, but we still go there,” she noted.
McBrown added, “I was invited, but I didn’t reply to the message. They have to pay me to show up.”
