Ghanaian actress and fashionista Nana Akua Addo has waded into the ongoing debate about fashion choices at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards red carpet, arguing that attendees should be given the freedom to express themselves rather than be judged or confined to themes.

Speaking on United Showbiz on UTV, Nana Akua Addo, widely regarded as one of Ghana's boldest fashion voices, waded into the criticism that has been thrown at various celebrities who appeared on the red carpet, some of them going widely against the stipulated theme for the red carpet.

Addo, however, revealed that even she has never followed a red carpet theme and has no intention of starting.

"I am not someone who sticks to red carpet themes. I have never followed a theme. Because with me, I feel that fashion is a way to express yourself. And I feel like themes are like someone telling you what to do. If you say the theme is black, I will wear red because I want to be free," she said.

The actress argued that the true purpose of fashion is to celebrate diversity, rather than impose uniformity, and called for more patience and curiosity when assessing what people choose to wear on the red carpet.

"In the fashion world, it is to celebrate diversity, not box you. If you get to the carpet, someone will ask you what you are wearing and why. Sometimes, what the person wears may not make sense, but when he or she explains the motivation, you will finally understand. Someone may have gone through something and wore a particular colour as a statement," she said.

Nana Akua Addo acknowledged that guidance has a role to play but insisted that the TGMAs is not the right platform for the latter.

"We should allow them to express themselves, but then we should guide them. And I don't think the TGMAs is the platform to judge fashion," she said.
