Fashionista and entrepreneur Osebo the ZaraMan has launched a stinging critique of the TGMA red carpet, calling for the awards to be taken outside Ghana and blaming what he described as a deeply poor fashion culture for the recurring embarrassment on Ghana's biggest music night.
His remarks come in the wake of widespread criticism that followed the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, where, despite a "A Touch of Glitter" dress code, several celebrities were slammed for uninspiring and poorly considered red carpet looks.
For Osebo, the red carpet lacks the enforcement needed to protect its prestige.
"I'd have preferred that the awards be held outside Ghana. Because you will go and buy €1,000, €2,000 worth of shoes, and someone will wear slippers and join you on a red carpet. Does it make sense?" he said.
He acknowledged that the TGMA red carpet is not exclusively for celebrities, but insisted that celebrity status alone should not be a free pass for shoddy dressing.
"The red carpet is not just for celebrities. Anybody whose outfit is of good standing can get the chance to go on the red carpet to grace. But someone wears 'chale wote' and just because that person is a celebrity, he will be allowed on that red carpet. To me it doesn't make sense," he added.
He rounded off with a blunt assessment of the broader problem: "It is also because the fashion sense of Ghanaians are very poor."
Osebo's comments add to a growing chorus of voices who feel Ghana's showbiz scene compares poorly to Nigeria, with many drawing unflattering contrasts with the African Magic Viewers' Choice Awards, which took place the same weekend.
