Award-winning Ghanaian music group Keche has insisted that they still would have emerged winners of the Best Group of the Year category at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards even if DopeNation had been nominated.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on May 14, 2026, they dismissed claims that they won the award because the category lacked strong competition.
According to Keche, some critics argued that DopeNation would have beaten them if they had been included in the category.
Responding to the criticism, the duo emphasized that the award recognizes a group's overall performance and consistency throughout the year, rather than the success of a single song.
“Some people were saying the Best Group of the Year category wasn’t competitive enough, that’s why we won. They said that if DopeNation were in the category, they were going to win. I was like it’s not Group Song of the Year; it’s the Best Group of the Year,” they said.

They continued, “It’s like how we have the gospel artiste of the year and the gospel song of the year, they’re two different things.”
Keche explained that they remained highly active throughout 2025, performing at numerous events across the country.
“Last year, we were actively working. We were playing shows back to back everywhere. From September, we had like three or more events in a week till December 31. Actively, Keche was fantastic,” they shared.
They also maintained that their consistency and strong performance over the year made them deserving winners, regardless of which other groups were nominated.
“Even if all the groups we know were in the category, we were still going to win,” they added.
