Written as a prayer and released in faith, Akoma now returns full circle with a Best Male Vocal Performance win for Asiama at the 27th TGMA.

At the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Asiama emerged as one of the ceremony’s most quietly compelling breakthrough stories.

For many listeners hearing his name for the first time, the immediate response was simple: “Who is he?”

Others described the moment as anomalous, not because the recognition felt undeserved, but because such a powerful and emotionally mature voice appeared so suddenly through a debut single.

And yet, once Asiama begins to sing, the uncertainty disappears.
With Akoma, the Kumasi born singer, songwriter, musician, and producer earned Best Male Vocal Performance while also receiving a Record of the Year nomination.

Together, the achievement marked a remarkable trifecta of firsts: a debut single, first nomination, and first major TGMA win.

There is a stillness in Asiama’s vocals that allows listeners to feel every lyric deeply. His voice carries emotional honesty, vulnerability, restraint, and spiritual depth in a way that feels increasingly rare within contemporary music.

Many also remember his appearance at age 12 on X Factor (Glo), where his performance deeply moved judges including Reggie Rockstone, M.I Abaga, and the late Mrs Onyeka Onwenu.

“The rules are the rules, but don’t be discouraged,” Onyeka told him after the competition. “By the time you come of age to take part in a contest like this, there won’t even be a contest. You’ll be beyond it.”

Those words remained with him for years and helped shape his decision not to rush into music prematurely.

That mentor and producer would later become Kwame Yeboah.
Speaking about Asiama, Yeboah has described the artist simply as “a rare gem.”

The world surrounding Asiama has also been shaped by the broader creative direction and artistic vision of Be.love, with emotionally immersive and symbolically driven storytelling led by Tina ‘Belove’ Atiemo.

At its core, Akoma explores the emotional and spiritual conflict between desire and conscious pleas for divine strength to overcome the temptations of the heart and mind.

“For many listeners, Asiama’s breakthrough feels less like the arrival of a new artist and more like the emergence of a voice people were waiting to hear.”
