Ghanaian media personality Yaw Siki has made a confession about the role hip-hop music played in shaping some of the destructive habits of his younger years.

He revealed that his love for hip-hop first sparked his curiosity about marijuana.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Yaw Siki was asked about his past experiences with smoking, alcoholism, and other vices.

“Hip-hop itself, that culture made me curious about weed smoking. I wanted to try weed because of hip-hop,” he said plainly.

He stated that references to marijuana in the genre were constant and fueled his curiosity about the drug.

“I loved underground hip-hop music, West Coast underground hip-hop music. They always talked about, ‘we smoke weed every day’ and all that. I’m a serious fan of them. So I was curious about weed because all the people I loved and followed talked about it,” he explained.

He said this curiosity eventually translated into action after he completed senior high school, when he began smoking for the first time.

On drinking, he pointed to his own mother unknowingly introducing him to alcohol.

He recalled how she usually sent him as a young boy to buy alcohol for her.

“My mom used to send me to buy alcohol. She loved gin a lot, and it got to a time when I wanted to taste it. So if there were three shots in the bottle, I would take one. That’s how I started drinking, with gin,” he revealed.

He was quick to add, however, that he holds no bitterness toward his mother or brother, whose casual attitude toward alcohol he also acknowledged played a role.

“They are humans, and probably they thought it was normal, just as we today might think some things are normal in our lives, but they may not be normal,” he said.
